What we don't have is Steampunk

*points to link in sig* Steam & Steel will be out soon.

Then there's also Sorcery & Steam by FFG already out. And the Iron Kingdoms setting, though that isn't steampunk just steamtech, and the Campaign Guide has yet to be released sadly.

As I understand the term, I think I beg to differ.

Go and beg to differ with some of the people that wrote the Iron Kingdoms then, 'cos they agree with me on it being steamtech not steampunk ;)

Sorry, don't mean to sound nasty there, just had to say that :D

Anyways, the Iron Kingdoms isn't really steampunk. Yes, it has steam technology, very much of a fantastic style, but it doesn't put an emphasis on social things like class pressures and there isn't a focus on the kinds of dystopia often centra; to steampunk. Its far more fantasy at its heart and core. There isn't a 'punk' bit to it really. In discussion with one of the writers of the IK, he said there's a reason why they've labelled it 'Full Metal Fantasy', since that comes closest to the feel they want to get.

I'd give a better and comparison of why I don't think the IK is steampunk if I had a copy of Steam & Steel on the comp I'm on at the mp, since I could copy/paste some of the descriptions I used there, but I'm on a uni one atm...

I'm not convinced "bronze age" would feel that different from "mideaval" in an RPG.

Medieval: I ride my horse to the Vampire's castle, and fight the Vampire with my steel sword.

Bronze: I ride my horse (which does not have stirrups) to the Cyclop's lair, and attack the Cyclops with my bronze sword.

i think the bigger difference comes in the roleplaying. especially if oyu do periodish things.

the alignments would be different (imho) and ac range would be shortened. i think there is actually a pretty decent demand for a good bronze age setting.

ziggurats instead of castles, boats that are rowed more than sailed. chariot rules. massive gobs of slavetrading. all that.

My vote: something not wholly any of them. My favorite campaign I have run is fantasy noir. Its technically steampunk, because I do focus on the dsytopia and social issues of a world undergoing a massive technological change, but I really focus on almost Jazz Age hedonism, noirish antiheros, glamorous molls, slimy by stylish villains and loads of cheap booze and guns. :)

Oh, and I have to agree with Carnifex on the IK. As written it is not steampunk, a literary term. Their world has its own conventions and ideas only peripherally related to the genre. Its great stuff, my favorite, if flawed, campaign setting outside of my own.

We need a Guy Noir Role Playing Game

OK perhaps we don't need a Guy Noir Role Playing Game but I'd love to see the look on Garrison Keeler's face when some Role Playing Publisher's Lawyer calls him up to secure the rights to a "Guy Noir Role Playing Game."

this needs a list of feats :)

I voted pirates. Of course, it has been done very competently by Gareth Michael Skarka and ... that other guy :o with the crew at Green Ronin already.
