D&D 4E Paizo and 4e.

I have been utterly unable to "wing" 3ed D&D. Not for lack of trying, or inexperience at starting a session with nothing more than an NPC name (some of my best sessions in Shadowrun started that way).

Anything that makes 4ed easier in that regard gets my support.

Nobody should be talking about other peoples' fun this way. I don't mind flamewars (although, of course, they are regulated here), but even there, there are limits of compassion and decency. Is it a huge thing? No, of course not. But it uses images which conjure up helplessness and acts of heinous brutality. We have control over the language we use, and it is our responsibility as decent human beings not to cross certain lines.

I totally and utterly disagree. People should engage in civil discourse, sure. But hyberbole and metaphor are the spice of language.

Saying that message board posts and opinions infringe on human decency or are "verbal brutality" is ridiculous and absurd.

Hmmm, tell that to the mods who ban posters for exactly those things. ;) I bet they will disagree.

Of course a new edition's success will depend on how it manages to convert the DMs over - but I suspect that making the game easier to run and prepare is one of the chief concerns of the 4e design team.
It is pretty much what got me interested in the new edition. If it makes running a game easier, more fun, and more spontaneous, I'm all over it.

They usually ban people for making personal attacks and otherwise violating the rules of board. They don't ban people for "infringing on human decency" merely by making opinionated posts that use hyperbole and metaphor. Even violent ones.

If they did it would be pretty hard to run a message board about a game that is fundamentally about gaining power and wealth by killing things and taking their stuff. ;)

Too true!

There's a big difference between "X edition should die a violent death" and "those who support X edition should die a violent death".

It's like using the term "pokemount"; it means you don't like the 3.5 paladin's mount...it doesn't mean that you hate people who like 'em.

Expressing dislike, even violent hysterical over-the-top dislike, of a thing should never be equated with the same toward a person.

IMHO, anyway.

There is also another emotional element: the way some 4e fans (pre-fans? :uhoh: ) talk about 3e is nothing but infuriating and inhuman.

WayneLigon isn't inhuman. I am inhuman.

Just look at my avatar.

I do it. However, I admit that D&D specifically is difficult to wing relative to other games. Even other d20 games.

And it gets worse the higher up in level you go.

As much as I really like d20 as it's currently constituted, the difficulty of running the game at higher levels isn't worth it to me. I usually just arbitrarily cap my games off at level 10, give or take a level or two. Applying E6 to all my d20 games going forward may be a great solution.

there is...another

It is my impression that Paizo is setting itself up as the anti-4e company, aided by the fans on its forums.

Meanwhile, the vibe I get from Necromancer Games they'll move to 4e as soon as possible, and adapt it as necessary to keep the feel they want.

And where does Goodman Games fit in this duality?
