PbP Combat maps

Hi folks,

I have recently started running a PbP campaign. Unfortunately my campaign tactical maps are done on tactiles for table top and i have no experience using any electronic tool. All help and suggestions are appreciated!

A quick, free option available is Autorealm (download at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=22266). The learning curve is pretty shallow. On the otherhand, its not as feature-rich as some of the other paidmappers out there (Dundjinni, Campaign Cartographer). I think its great for making quick combat maps where looks aren't a priority. In my experience, making large, detailed maps (like setting maps) are where it can be a little more difficult to get the same result out of Autorealm than you would with a paid mapper.

IMO, most of the icons included w/ autorealm are fantasy oriented, so you might have to make some concessions in terms of the icons you use if your game is modern/sci-fi oriented. I used it on its own for a long time; lately, I've been adding some additional effects using GIMP (freeware photo editor).

In my expierence, Autorealm is about as feature rich as the higher end programs, but has a somewhat annoying user interface and doesn't generally give as good reults.
