PC Survival in Star Wars

Because some people insist there is a "correct" definition of hit points that they feel applies to all games with hit points, irrespective of what the rules say?

The irony of this statement made me laugh for about two minutes. Thank you very much, sir.

I felt like I was in a Tarantino movie.

YMMV :) We found that 1 shot from a blaster rifle is likely to pretty much take out a 1st level PC without removing him from play. A blaster rifle averages 14 points of damage (not taking into account criticals) and a 1st level Scoundrel has 18 HP. We liked this balance a lot as it made us fear being hit but left us some reserve to use Second Wind as is appropriate for the genre.

Hey, I grabbed all the cover I could and I even kneeled!

OK in that case the probabilities don't support the end result (stormtroopers hitting in every other shot). Maybe more detail as to the combat and its environ could help.

BTW what feats did you have? For a quick Scoundrel Running Attack allows you to run from full cover, shoot and then back into full cover (where you have no chance of being hit :) )

We have also found that most quick PCs have the Initiative skill trained and get to move first. This often allows for Stormtroopers to be thinned before they even get to act.

I think that's exactly what I've found. And the "Palpatine versus three Jedi" discussion on the Wizards boards seems to confirm it.

Not sure what you mean. You appear to be agreeing that SW PCs aren't tanks?

You don't have to be so coy about who "some people" are. Nebulous and I have shown you in the Star Wars rules exactly what hit points mean. Heck, you even quoted the first paragraph yourself which states "and the ability to turn a serious blow into a graze or near miss."

If you want to emulate the movies... well, the movie characters aren't 1st level, so yeah your PCs are going to get hit more often. In my very limited experience, I found low levels to be fairly dangerous - 2 blaster rifle shots will drop almost anyone.

My own experience with getting shot in SWSE must be an exception to the rule, then... It seems like every time I get into a shootout, I get shot... And every time I get shot I am reduced to negative hit points (by an amount of damage that is WAY over my damage threshold).

Seriously. I've been in... seven shootouts? no... eight, so far. I've been shot once in each one, and twice in the last one. Every single time... I've been reduced to negative hit points.

Although, I don't suppose it helps that I'm playing a Noble with a 10 Con... So at 2nd level I've got 21 hit points.

Err... there's no concept of negative hit points in SWSE.

Yeah, it sounds like your GM's dice hate you. Unless he's confusing the concealment and cover in regards to the Aim action (which negates concealment penalty, not cover bonus). Or the GM flat out hates you/your character and is fudging their rolls to screw you over (not a likely scenario but sadly a possible one given some of the petty GMs I've had the misfortune to play under).

And like drothgrey said, there's no negative hit points in Saga.

Hmm. Unless i'm wrong, you would have to be spending Force points in these situations or die. There's no negative hit points. If you get hit for over your threshold limit and are sent to at least 0, you have to spend a FP to survive.
