People worried about saving everyone else

I like a good story. A character to me is a pile of numbers and notes, no matter how much I've enjoy playing it or how long. If I'm playing in a game and the rest of the party might be saved by my staying back to buy them time fighting the BBEG, then I'm gonna do it. My character might die (though it's not my intention to commit PC suicide), but if it advances the storyline or makes for good drama, I'm gonna do it. I can always roll up another!

It's fairly rare in D&D that it makes sense to 'leave a man behind' because offense is usually much more powerful than defense in the system, so a powerful foe will trash a single PC without slowing down. It can happen if the foe has non-bypassable DR, so they can't be defeated but can be held off to give the other PCs time to escape. Or a horde of thousands of orcs who need to get through a choke-point; although usually such hordes can be evaded by the whole party unless the orcs have speed 30' and some of the PCs are in heavy armour, are small, or otherwise have 20' move.

In a game I played 20 years ago, we were hunting the Evil Emperor & Empress. I killed the Emperor with a psi-blast but the Empress got more powerful as we fought her, turning into more & more powerful creatures. I held her off while the other PCs fled to seek the McGuffin that could defeat her - I then surrendered to her and offered her my services, & kept her chatting while the other PCs got the thingie & came back later to defeat her... great game. :)
