How much would you charge for one of your players to get a wizard to cast a permanent enlarge person on him?
Cheers guys,
Sam

SRD has:

Experience points: 500xp = 2500gp

Caster level (minimum) 9 x spell level 1 x 10gp = 90gp for Enlarge Person

Caster level (minimum) 9 x spell level 5 x 10gp = 450gp for Permanency

Total = 3040gp

Where does 5*XP come from? I'm ignorant of this part of the rules. I've been much more generous with the multiplier in the past.

I am aware of the disspelling possibility, but we haven't played it out that way.

Check the SRD Equipment section: Spellcasting and Services. In the description (not the table) part labelled "Spell".

It also goes on to note that expensive material components and non-divine foci are included in the cost, as are cost to cover transport of caster if required etc (not that it was included in the OP's Q but is usually forgotten).

Note also that most spellcasters with an Int above 8 will not cast XP-requiring spells for profit. It's a very poor business model to burn XP at only x5 the value when you can create items for over double that.

So I generally don't have spellcasters agree to cast such spells without significant in-game reasons.

Oh, bah. It's not an either/or proposition. A money-hungry spellcaster can do both and make even more cash. In fact, it would be a "very poor business model" (assuming wizards care about such things) not to do so.

XP are cheap. You don't use them for anything except leveling up, and as soon as you fall a level behind the rest of your companions you start earning them even faster. And when you burn them up as components for spells cast for hire, at least you're not also spending weeks of your valuable time crafting items (which is why, I believe, such XP are "worth" less than those spent on item creation).

It is the only business model for spellcasters who don't have item creation feats, but do have the permanency spell.

Pendantic note: if you wanted to save a few coins you could technically hire a 1st level wizard (or use a scroll) for this part, but it typically wouldn't be worth it.

It's not as bad a prospect if you factor in optional rules like power components that'll defray the exp cost to the caster. Heh, or even less savory things like liquid pain, sacrifice, etc.
