Person of Interest is an interesting show

If you're not watching it, please permit me to share a mild spoiler to try to entice you to watch it.

Last night was the second season finale. The basic premise of the show is that a tech guy (Finch) and a spy (Reese) save people from imminent threats. You early-on find out that they get their information from a government computer that collates all surveillance information in the country and beyond in order to detect threats. Big threats like terrorism get handled by the government. Small threats get deleted, or at least they would have if Finch hadn't found a way to get that information out.

Still, the main characters only get the slightest amount of info from the Machine, because the Machine is designed to only spit out info on 'People of Interest,' but not share the full data that it collects, in order to prevent abuse. So the main characters have to do a lot of leg-work on their own.

Until, that is, last night's episode.

Due to some plot stuff I don't want to spoil, for one 24 hour period they get access to the Machine's full knowledge base, and they get to use its nigh-omniscient A.I. to let them pull off some ridiculous and awesome feats. Bad guys are coming? Don't worry, the traffic cameras spotted them, so you've got warning? They're in the building? No problem, the internal security system feeds into the Machine -- which has access to cameras, acoustics, building schematics, facial recognition, and government databases to know just who you're facing, how skilled they are, what tactics they've used in the past -- so you know exactly where to aim and shoot before they even get line of sight to you.

The episode's title: "God Mode."

It was pretty cool. I can't wait to see where this show goes from here. If anyone wants to talk about the show after this first post, please use spoiler tags.

I liked season 1 a lot more than season 2.

Season 2 seemed a lot less dark and gritty. Also a lot more "filler" episodes.

The antagonists from season 1, seemed to become "token" in season 2. (ie. HR, Elias, Kara Stanton, etc ...).

With that being said, the season 2 episodes with Amy Acker and Sarah Shahi were done quite well.

At this point, I see this show as more of a "what if" scenario of a computer that is able to do all this stuff.

With present day technology, I'm somewhat more skeptical that this can be done as portrayed in the show.

I was reading a recent thread on a computer security expert's blog, which looked into the technical feasibility and cost of being able to do this type of real time surveillance in principle.

Typical shoot the mooks,.leave the bad guys alive episode last night......I enjoy the show, but I it should be something more than it is. The interaction with the computer needs to be more. Otherwise it is just sometimes the computer identifies a target, and then turns into just another cop show, even if they are not really cops.
