Petition to WOTC for POL Map

Here's what I replied to Rich Baker's post over at Gleeeeeeemax:

Rich,

Why not have the best of both worlds?

You, Mearls and Andy (for instance) could each come up with a short (say, 10-page) guide to your versions of the Points of Light setting, and they could be made available through DI, Dragon or Dungeon. That way you can give DMs three (still sketchy) settings to build on, and you wouldn't be crystallizing the core setting (since you have 3 versions of it). Kinda like "designers' homebrews".

NO MAP! NO MAP! NO MAP! NO MAP!

C'mon people, chant it with me!

...unless it's Klaus's idea of several different opinions on what the map might look like, with none of them being 'the' official map.

Boo! Down in front! No official maps!

I agree. They can have an implied campaign setting based on the names and relationshps in the core books, but if they are going to keep it generic, that's all they need. Once you put in a map, then our ability to crib the implied setting for other settings is impaired.

No map!

I'm advocating not only a map, but several versions of the PoL assumptions, messing around with history, power groups, etc.

If the whole point of the PoL default world is to let players and dms personalize their campaigns... and to have a few points of reference without over-defining things... then I say NO MAP.

I'd also vote for no official map of a new setting. As previously mentioned, it would sort of defeat the point of the PoL concept. I would place solid bets on players and DMs everywhere taking the bits of the PoL ideas and creating settings of various sizes. We'll see tons of maps, setting ideas, histories, and more. As far as making something available for new players, I'd say there should be some sort of "Player Spotlight" on the DDI so that WotC could provide a place for player-posted ideas to be accessible to those new players. Maybe a monthly contest chosen by the staff...or quarterly votes by other DDI members.

I like maps. Maps are useful things. Particularly when I don't have to draw them.

The "official" PoL map (and yes, there needs to be such a thing) should be in the DMG, to allow DMs to release as much or as little info to the players as required, and to tweak to suit the individual game...but should very much use a "when in doubt, leave it out" approach when it comes to detail. That said, an official map would provide a handy frame of reference for tournament play, for module writers, and for DMs new to the trade.

The map should also be made copyright-free, so anyone can use it.

What they could do is in the DMG's worldbuilding section, do a worked example of "Making a Campaign Map" with step-by-step description of their thought process and recommendations, ending with a full example map.
