PHB classes: fact or rumor

there's a chance Elementalists will be in PHB. Source - they are mentioned alongside wizards in dwarf entry in Races & Classes.

Don't forget that the game goes to level 30! That makes the classes' page count longer, too.

I was curious to see if the combat chapter is actually shorter, so I checked. It's actually several pages longer. Of course, one page of that is art, the chapter incorporates some of the stuff that would have been found in the "Magic" chapter in 3.5 (like areas of effect), there are more bulleted lists and callouts, and the font's not as tiny.

I wouldn't be too confident in your "3 new classes per additional PH" number. ;)
Man those WotC guys know how to tease, the cheeky devils. He comes onto a thread about what classes in the PHB? No one here really knows, so what does he do? He answers a question about how many pages in the combat chapter and tells us the font is bigger! LOL

We've been told that they are play testing classes that are not in PHB1. From this I would presume that the Druid and Barbarian have been getting at least some playtesting. I would also find it quite believable for WOTC to hold back mention/confirmation of 1 or more of the PHB classes to allow for the "Scoop!: Druids are In!" headlines during the marketing phase. I would find it suprising if they were to leave out those 4 classes at this stage, but I don't think we can draw any conclusions about what is in or out from playtesting reports. I see the reason for these classes being mentioned being that they were mostly the ones that were mentioned around august., and the ones that most people speculate as being in.

What classes in PHB1 get summoning or shapechanging effects?
Warlocks will get summoning (or at least, that was the plan at the time of R&C). Possibly no-one will get shapechanging in the first PHB -my understanding was that it doesn't specify that shapechanging creature descriptions will be in PHB1; just that they will be in the text of any shapechanging powers in any book.

Why suprised? Probably absent mindedness. The statement that the effects of shapechanging being included with the shapechanging power didn't cause me to imediately conclude that they were refering to a wizard power. But if they do infact include all such effects for wizard powers then that would imply that they are dropping stat blocks in the middle of spell descriptions (which would be suprising), or radically changing how those spells are working.
There is nothing particularly special about spells descriptions. Spells are just one type of powers of the many. EDIT: As I understand it. I don't have any special knowledge or anything.

My guess is that wizards will have controller powers that change people into things (like Baleful Polymorph, but 4e-fied). We already know that there is an Epic Destiny that allows you to summon dragons.

It may also be referring to individual spells.. like spell x grants shapechanging but the exact effects for the shapechange are completely self contained (not referring to other existing supernatural abilities, etc).

In this recent post Mike Mearls confirmed the warlord and the ranger in the PH:

You can totally do a no magic game with the PH by sticking to the fighter, rogue, warlord, and ranger.

And we know the Warlock is in. I don't recall a quote that says the Paladin is definitely in the PHB1, but it's been in a whole lot of playtests.

While Mike attempted to withdraw Logan Bonner's earlier "8 classes in the PHB1" quote, I think it still looks the most likely number. If there is another class, like Kamikaze Midget I think it will be a controller, probably a divine controller. Oddly, while they've talked about arcane defenders and leaders in the Swordmage and Bard(*), Wizards haven't ever mentioned divine controllers and strikers that I can remember.

(*)Assuming the Bard is arcane.

Not to mention there was a 4E Design and Development article specifically about Paladin smiting.

Just to clarify, he didn't withdraw--he refused to confirm or deny. There's a difference, and I should have made this clearer back in November.
