Nope. Learned in the 80s, after being interested since she was young. Irish is our family's biggest ancestral cultural connection, but it's diaspora by way of Brooklyn.
She's taught other stuff since the 60s, though, so once she was sufficiently fluent, teaching for the local Gaelic League was for her an obvious way to stay in practice and help expand/keep the language alive.

It may very well be the smarter way to go but--surprise, we're not all smart about all things, and can take a long time to learn even if we do. Like I said, I took literally years to decide much as I was going to regret it, GMing for the group I'd played with for decades just wasn't working any more.
