I’m thinking that they perceive those things as a threat in some way.

If the topic is about games and specific playstyles, it makes even less sense to me. There seems to be as many games and communities that support nearly every playstyle out there right now as there ever has been.

One perception of the blossoming of a wide variety of options is it’s a de-emphasis on what YOU like.

Even in major cities, it may be hard to find a group that plays what you like how you like. And this is especially true if you’re not online or in a game-shop desert.

When M:tG first hit the shelves, I lived in Austin. It was a hit. After a while, new shipments would sell out within a couple weeks…except for one store. They ALWAYS had something. It turns out, that store’s owner had a buddy with a game store in LA, and Magic just gathered dust. So the dude in Austin kept buying out the guy in LA.

Fast forward a couple decades, and a lot of stores that used to have board game nights or host RPG sessions suddenly were hosting M:tG (and other CCG) tours & events.

If you were in a situation where your FLGS was where you gamed, suddenly, you were on the outside looking in.

All resources are finite. Too many boats in an area can make it worse for everyone.

It’s hard to do commercial fishing where people are swimming or water skiing…and vice versa.

Hell, you can’t even have a whole bunch of the same kinds of boats in the same area without causing problems- overfishing, collisions, etc.

Yeah, and my Dad gets grumpy because no one makes movie musicals or westerns anymore.

The analogies are going to get strained pretty quickly. If all one cares about is "their game, their way", and find eventually that their game is no longer the favorite, and can't stand anything new, or can't find people who play their own game - despite the internet, then yeah, they're going to be miffed. Miffed in comparison to all the people who were unhappy when they weren't able to find other games.

Obviously, there is always going to be someone who feels excluded or is unable to participate as they may have in the past. Be that as it may, there are more OSR alternatives than you can shake a stick at. Naturally, there's D&D in its current incarnation. There are narrative, storytelling games. There's tactical games, you name it. Moreover, I think there's more games right now getting a good amount of traction because of actual plays, YouTube, people learning how to market their games, etc. This hasn't always been the case.
