Pukunui is a chubby Māori boy whose name means "big belly". He is the protagonist in a series of classic New Zealand children's books, in which he goes on various adventures in pre-colonial Aotearoa. The series was written and illustrated by Māori artist
James Waerea (Ngāti Kahungunu, Te Awara), who created the series in part because he wanted to see more brown faces in children's early readers.
