For the first time, I saw a thread title, said to myself "That's a fraught topic!" and came here and realized some of the posts were about it. Usually I'm out of the loop.

I loved 'The Rise of Skywalker.'

I preferred the implied democratization of the Force from the prior films over the "bloodline" approach, but overall I enjoyed it as a film

I dont mind the democratization so much as found it odd to need to happen within the saga series itself. Particularly, the 8th and 9th films of the saga.

I will say this briefly.

I think that The Last Jedi was the best film in the mainline series (the saga series) since The Empire Strikes Back. Unfortunately, for a lot of reasons, the last trilogy is almost completely nonsensical because of the abrupt shift from TLJ to Rise of Skywalker. ROS is, for me, just not a good film.

I would even say that Abrams' two films in the Star Wars Saga remind me very much of his two films in Star Trek. My personal take on the Kelvin Universe:

Yes, the casting was amazing (RIP Anton Yelchin .... ).

But when the first Kelvin movie came out, the franchise ... Star Trek ... it was pretty moribund. The first movie is Abrams at his best. LENS FLARES. ACTION. LENS FLARES. COMEDY. LENS FLARES. FAN SERVICE. LENS FLARES.

It's like getting on a superfast roller coaster ride while eating a bunch of cotton candy and having nostalgic scenes of Star Trek shown to you (but with LENS FLARES). You have a great time, you're happy, and at the end of the ride you're glad you did it ... so long as you don't think about it too much, and ignore the terrible pain in your stomach from all those empty calories.

By the second movie (Into Darkness) those tricks- the remixed nostalgia, the LENS FLARES, and the action/comedy/sugar rush have worn off, and you realize that it's just empty.

Such is life with Abrams. He can reboot a franchise, but he can't keep it going. He understands the symbols, but not what they mean.

Same thing here. The Last Jedi provided the possibility of something new, and Rise of Skywalker slammed the door shut on it.


And with that said, I will recommend moving off the topic of Star Wars. It is my experience that nothing, not even discussing 4e, is as contentious as Star Wars. When I first joined EnWorld, I made the mistake of making a joke about Return of the Jedi, which a commenter here found so objectionable that they put me on their ignore list. You're better off making fun of someone's mom* than trying to have a rational conversation about Star Wars.


*Your momma jokes, like bard jokes, are so old they've been done by everyone. Just like your mom.

I agree, although I find it quite entertaining to see folks post several paragraphs on a subject and end with "now is the time to stop talking about it..."
