Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

While main stream cinema has a "high speed only" problem, I'll also posit that indie stuff sometimes has the opposite. There's a particularly annoying set of horror films (and stories, etc) that seem to be built around the idea that "less is more" and "nothing is scarier", but take it to the ridiculous extreme where it seems like sometimes they forget to tell an actual narrative. People have said D&D is 20 minutes of fun spread across 4 hours; indie horror sometimes feels the same way.

I rarely turn off of a movie once I get in far enough, but there have been a couple where I got bored enough to say "Get on with it already!" and watched the last half on fast forward. Most recently, Skinamarink and Possum. Also, it's the main reason I never got into The Magnus Archives.
Several people I know were in an indie horror film, a few years back, and I watched it simply because I knew them. I had to have a couple of them explain it because not only was the plot paper thin, but the audio was so poorly done that you couldn't hear the big reveal at the end, that explained what little plot there was. This is what happens when you have a person who thinks they can be writer, director, audio, and producer all in one. without sharing any load.

Each player comes to the table with their own experiences and preferences. If one player has that gamer mindset, that's all it takes.
I have found that not to be the case. Asking, "Why are you optimizing so ruthlessly when no one else is?" has been enough to clue someone into the expectations at the table.

It is, of course, possible that I am the luckiest GM ever, and my players are unique unicorns; but I do not believe it to be the case.

lol, yeah that makes sense of his plot moving at break neck speed. I mean, if you have to use the bathroom during a JJ ST film, Kirk will gain command, lose it, and regain command in the 1-3 min you are gone.

It just isn't what I want from Star Trek (give me dialogue and space to breathe). I do think he is better suited for something like Star Wars, but I think that trilogy was completely mismanaged from the outset

Better than at least three (maybe six) of the movies?
