Another classic example!

Tangentially, one of my friends followed in her father’s footsteps, and has become a respected professor in the same field he became notable in. AFAIK, she’s still using her maiden name in a professional context.

One of her students turned in a final paper that plagiarized from her dad’s books, and somehow thought she wouldn’t notice.

To be honest, they look nothing alike. I didn't know he was her pappy. My bad. I'll check 23andMe the next time before I borrow from someone's book.

In all honesty, it was stupider than I’ve made it out to be. Her dad was well known enough that the surname should have at least begged the question of familial relationship.

But besides the family name in common, she occasionally taught from his books. AND she got her undergraduate degree from the program in which he was the head of the department. Back then, at least, it was one of the more notable undergraduate departments in the field, sometimes participating think-tanks alongside graduate level programs.

It would be akin to being a college football player and not realizing the Sanders or Manning you were standing next to was part it THOSE families. Or an actor oblivious to Drew Barrymore being a member of THOSE Barrymores.

Unfortunately, I don’t know what happened to the plagiarist after getting failed in that course. As I recall, the events in question happened while my friend was teaching at a military academy, and that would be grounds for immediate expulsion.

It’s possible, though, that those events got them to reconsider their decisions, and they’re doing good work these days.

I say that because all 4 of my grandparents- plus my Mom- were educators. My paternal grandfather in particular was notable in the New Orleans educational system as a HS teacher and principal as well as a college professor.* And I’ve met a LOT of black professionals who talk about how his suspending or expelling them from school worked like a life reset.





* I’m still surprised he hasn’t had a school or building named after him.
