My favorite story in this vein was from a CFO who was part therapy group I was in. His then CEO had asked him durning a meeting to do something ethically dubious at best, criminal at worst. He said no in no uncertain terms. After the meeting the CEO steps into his office to ask him again and the CFO picked up his coffee mug and threw it across the room at the wall near the CEOs head. It never came up again.

This man also gave me a quote that I still ponder today, “You cannot invest your soul in compromise.” I have interpreted and reinterpreted it through many phases of my life. It is both simple and very complex at the same time.
