I had a friend who was in much the same situation. His response was more along the lines of, "You know, I could do that, but as it's outside of my scope of work you'll need to cut a cheque for $XXXXXX.00 in order for me to do it."

I wouldn't have even known how to do the job properly; I'm not an engineer, and have no real technical training, I just knew enough of the necessary terminology to massage what the engineers were saying (with some consultation with them to make sure) into something that was going to be comprehensible to the mortal man. Far as I can tell, he just wanted me to do it because I got along with them and he really didn't.
