Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

The other disadvantage of having a really good vocabulary that you have acquired from reading is that you know a lot of words, but ... you haven't heard them spoken.

Which means that you will whip out your 25-cent words, and then find out that no, you don't know how to say them.

Did this happen to me with aficionado when I was very young? No, and only a bard would repeat that damnable lie.
There are words you understand when you hear them and there are words that you understand when you read them; there are words you use correctly that you know how to say and there are words you use correctly that you know how to write.

I still remember a spelling test from primary school. I had learned the rule, "I before E, except after C."

The word?

Freighter.

Was I angry? Is this something that I still wake up screaming about? Am I reasonably certain that my first grade teacher was a bard?

Of course not, why do you ask?
After all this time, you still feel the terrible weight of it upon your shoulders…

I have a friend who is definitely a smart dude, just not as formally educated as the rest of our circle. And he falls into this trap regularly. The first time I really noticed it was when he described something as a “terrible facade”, pronounced with a hard “c” sound.

Fortunately, he also has an excellent sense of humor.
