Could we disable the reciprocal behaviour of the ignore feature? @Morrus @Umbran @Dannyalcatraz
Please don't. Before I enabled it, I've had people I've put on ignore follow me around, get around the ignore feature to see what I said, post trolling comments mocking what I've said and passive-aggressively harass me by keeping the conversation going by whatever means necessary.

I can't make those people go to therapy or ban them -- or get everyone else here to stop talking with people who clearly are posting in bad faith -- but I can make evidence of my posting here invisible to them.

I find the fighting with ghosts amusing really.

I think the reciprocal ignore is itself also a choice. Unless the feature has changed, it's up to the ignorer if they want to become invisible to whoever they're blocking. I believe the intended use case for two-way Ignore is to shut down stalking, but how people actually use it is up to them.

There have been a number of Meta threads about this. Here's the initial sticky thread on the topic:

So what we're saying here is that there are enough disturbed individuals on these boards that we can't have proper reasonable adult board features? That's too bad. Actual pseudo/partial stalkers? Yikes... sorry to hear that @Whizbang Dustyboots

I have fond memories of this game, but some of its participants, are yes, a bit alarming. Just sad and awkward in most of those cases, and you try to make things better for those folks, and make them feel included, but sometimes you do have to get your antennae up with the more extreme examples.

Having said that, I still think you should be able to have the board function as I described. Cases like yours (i.e. @Whizbang Dustyboots ) I would think are outliers. Those outliers should be escalated to board moderation to deal with. It's not necessary to replace moderator action for these extraordinary cases with a feature that unnecessarily impacts the ability of others to enjoy the boards as they should be allowed to.

Unfortunately, I think 'up to them' results in passive-aggressive behaviour in many cases.

I can think of at least a dozen folks who act like this here.

In my defense, my father spent most of my formative years installing buttons and then figuring out just how much he could push those buttons without quite breaking the RealAlHazred. I'm trying real hard to unlearn it so that I can break the cycle of toxicity for my daughter.
