My Traveller game is getting ready to enter the Sword Worlds, which they didn't really visit during my previous 12-year campaign. Now I'm considering how much I want to lean into the "Star Viking" trope, and how much I want to go "that's just Imperial propaganda!" for stuff. Among other things, Traveller (at least in several iterations) has built-in economics -- the reason different starship construction things cost what they do is because it makes economic sense, and if you try to extrapolate from one thing to another it usually makes sense at any point you choose to look. But if I go hard "Star Vikings" I can introduce indentures for starship crews, drop the cost of operating a starship in the Sword Worlds, and really mess with the PCs (who will not be doing that) when they inevitably have rivalries with SW-based merchant crews...

It's been a long time since I read Piper. Various iterations of the rules have made it possible for the Sword Worlds to be a threat, and some, as one TL difference makes ships better, not a threat.
