For me it was Bon Jovi in the late 80's. I can't remember how much I paid, but after a full concert they came out and sang 7 or 8 encore songs. It felt like a second concert. Then the brought out Sam Kinison and cleared the first two rows in front of the stage of a ton of rock stars. They all went on stage with Sam and sang Wild Thing just like in Sam's video. After that was done, I kid you not, they wheeled out a grand piano and Lionel Richie came out and sang a song for us.The best bang for the buck show I ever saw was paying $10 to see Swervedriver opening with Machine Head, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden following (in that order).
It was magical and memorable for many reasons:
1) the price for that lineup, obviously
2) the venue (now demolished) was a converted 1950s hangar, all curved metal & concrete, so there was nowhere for the sounds to go except through humans…and it was LOUD.
3) the venue had a no stagediving/crowd surfing policy…which Eddie Vedder broke during Machine Head’s set, getting him ejected. Fortunately, many fans were able to convince security & mgmt that he was the lead singer in the next act, and ejecting him would be a bad idea.
4) There were drugs EVERYWHERE- more than any show I’ve attended before or since. It’s a good thing I didn’t have a drug test, because even though I don’t partake, I was probably 2nd hand exposed enough to test positive.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Message boards on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched LCD screens glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die.
