And I get the impression that speed-running a ban is a sort of sport to some.

You do have to wonder, given the people who seem to react to suggestions to tone it down by turning up the gain instead. Its honestly odder than the person who comes in and faceplants in two posts.
If I recall correctly, there’s at least one non-spam, non-porn poster who got booted after a single post.

I just read [That Thread] where a newcomer to EN World somehow managed to get six warnings and a permaban in less than a month, because they couldn't grasp the concept of being polite in a public space.

It's such a low bar to clear. I have no idea how people mess that up, but here we are.

There are big chunks of the internet that view it as a space where you don't have to interact with people the way you would offline, being rude to people is part of the appeal for them.
This. Once in awhile somebody comes into EN world from the wild of the internet and just expects everyone to be awful. When they get modded they don’t understand it.

Six Warnings and a Permaban! Six Warnings and a Permaban!

"Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Five for the Entwives and their pear tree song,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie."

Of course the five have vanished and the Ents still search. But if you include that line you'll never hear the end of them talking about it, which also explains why that carol isn't popular in Middle Earth.
