I'm more of the opinion that English-speakers were a very mean-spirited prank played on the Celtic-branch language speakers of Great Britain and Ireland.
That's not unreasonable. Maybe the transliteration is more like revenge than a prank. "We'll use your letters, but we'll assign them to different phonemes."

EDIT: I'm probably still carrying scars from my time recording audiobooks. We (or at least I) hated to see Gaelic come up, it was such a pain to get right (we had to get it right).
