When my wife was going to grad school in Montana, her hiking buddy carried a large pistol in case he encountered a bear. Not because he expected to shoot the bear--even a .357 magnum isn't a great choice for that--but because bears don't like the compression wave.

And here I thought it was so he could shoot his hiking buddy in the leg and get away from the bear faster than she could.

We domesticated them? My personal experience suggests it's the other way round...

Current scientific consensus is that they domesticated themselves. They moved into our space from surrounding wilderness, accepting the constraints in exchange for the goodies. Modern feral cats living in places like barns and shops keep reinventing the first steps of the process, accepting a few constraints and getting a few goodies.

Once they were used to living with us and vice versa, further co-evolution took place (and continues).

So my wife and I trade stupid gifs back and forth. They're mostly cats and bears. One time she googled "hairy bear butts." The results were predictable.

Tangential: In 2024-25, I was looking to replace a well-worn leather vest. I looked at the various places I’ve bought leather clothing from before, but no luck. Several no longer sold vests, some did, but not in styles that matched my own. A few no longer sold CLOTHING or had ceased business operations altogether.

But YEARS ago, I found Etsy had a bunch of quality leather workers, so I went looking for vests on Etsy. And I found a BUNCH.

And given where this tangential post started, you might be able to guess that a significant amount of the ones I found were depicted with “fetish”/“bear”/“hardbody” dudes.

I did eventually find Etsy sellers who had what I was looking for…including at least one selling bear wear. Wound up with three leather vests- black, blue, and distressed brown- and may get some more, later on.
