Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Can someone explain to me the extremely Silicon Valley venture billionaire habit of naming their companies and/or their products after the most evil things from Tolkien they could think of?
They can’t resist telling on themselves.
Dude, it’s not just Silicon Valley.

Besides @billd91’s correct observation, there’s also a large percentage of people who have displayed a fundamental lack of understanding of progressive fiction, protest songs and the like. They love the kewl names and grasp the aggressive tones, but fail to recognize that they’re being cast as the fictional villains until it’s undeniably spelled out to them.

Then they rage quit their fandom.

See Star Wars, Star Trek, LotR, James Bond as well as hit songs by Bruce Springsteen, RAtM, Green Day, CCR, Twisted Sister and many, many more.

Thiel’s anti-comprehension of Tolkien is of a piece with Musk’s anti-comprehension of Iain Banks, all the guys who think the Empire are heroes of Star Wars, and on and on. It’s apparently a basic human drive to go from “I like this” to “this must be compatible with my moral and aesthetic priors”. That’s a handy thing in other circumstances, it just can get really stupid and immoral.
Or some people are simply evil and root for the bad guys. The two you mentioned for example.

See also people missing the anti-capitalist messages of cyberpunk for the kewl neon and katanas. Not that they’re evil per se, but they’re certainly missing the forest for the trees.
