Planescape: Chrysalis

Noi'nu raises a shaky hand and calls out so that all can hear, "Halt! No blood needs be spilt!" The silvered mask looks towards the merc-who-is-not and Noi'nu speaks, "I have the answer to your riddle. One is not when one is many, as am I and as are you. Now, tell me what it is that you want with me and then depart the body which you inhabit..."

To live a life, such as it is, as anothers tool, is no life at all

The mercenary who is not backs off, but never lowers his guard. His eyes dance from green to blue and finally settle on deep brown. The stentorian voice chuckles, "All too true brother. But also won is not, when all is lost. As we are, forever searching for peace others gained so long ago." His voice changed to that of the woman's halfway through the last sentence which ended in a sigh.

"We live for them now, chained to those who will not die. Our time is gone," the calm male voice says, and the merc slowly shakes his head. "But they refuse, and we remain. Surely you enderstand to live a life, such as it is, as anothers tool, is no life at all. "

Rexx looks from the merc, to Noi'nu, and back again. "Barmy sods...", he mutters, "like tumblin' into a Xaositech's tea party..." The tiefling nervously fingers his knives, as if seeking to find answers hidden deep within their cold metal innards...

Zee, unsure of what to do in this unsual scenario, backs away from the merc a few steps, but does not lower his defenses. His hard eyes never leave the merc, waiting for a surprise attack.

Noi'nu nods at the merc's words and then replies. "Who has you trapped here, and how may we help free you? Where are the others, like the one you inhabit, that entered into here just recently?"

He's betrayed the Veil and the Dead beyond

"You don't know his name, it is long since forgotten, but he is Mataurin; warrior, magi, and once advisor to the council. He would not leave when the earth screamed and split our city in the night, I know now he saw it as his chance to rule. So he remained, along with those he could convince, and those that were his thralls. But his magic wasn't powerful enough to stop nature..." the one time merc shakes his head.

"Mataurin must be dealt with, and then we all can rest." All the voices mumble in a chorus. "And yes there were others, but they have become like me. Beware the night, Mataurin grows strong, he calls upon the memories of the ages to amuse him with things long since turned to dust; thoughts walk like ghosts, and he can command them to possess the living."

The former merc's eyes shift through a rainbow of colors once again before he settles on a new voice, stern and sharp as Zee's ready blade. "I should kill you now, or die trying, that would be a good death. The others fool themselves, there's no miraculous transcendence, not for those that have betrayed their orders and plotted death."

A deep growl escapes the merc's lips and he shakes his head. "Mataurin is already dead and so are we," the stentorian voice snarls. "He's betrayed the Veil and the Dead beyond." The merc's eyes, dark as coal, bore into Noi'nu, and he visibly shakes with tension, "Leave us to our fate, we can control ourselves, but we cannot help you. The others that entered our city will probably help you less, steel and blood will be their answer to any words."
