Play without owning rules books?

How many RPGs have you played without owning the books for the rules?

For me there have been a bunch:

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Game
Shadowrun
Paranoia
Star Frontiers
Rifts
Mage the Ascension
Vampire the Masquerade
GURPS
Mechwarrior
World of Warcraft RPG
Rolemaster

For some of these I got the books long after the campaigns had ended but I played a lot without having anything but a character sheet and a GM with the books who wanted to run the game. I've also played in a campaign where the DM required all players to bring their own PH to the game or not be allowed to play.

In my current group where I DM I think half the guys have a PH.

Mostly we view the rules as the DM's responsibility while the player's is to come up with a character and tell the DM what the character does and tries to do. For us getting the rules right is a lot less important than providing a fun experience.

Drager & Dæmoner (a Swedish system translated into Danish, it means Dragons & Demons, extremely original, right ;) )
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Game (1st edition)
Vampire - The Masquerade
d20 Modern (however, I got the books today)
Some homebrewed rules a friend of mine had made (not very good in my opinion)

And that's about it... I don't mind playing without having the rulebooks as long as the GM knows what he's doing and can tell me the basics of the system.

  • Basic D&D
  • CoC
  • Stormbringer
  • Runequest
  • Talislanta
  • Paranoia

I started gaming with Basic D&D but my group soon switched to AD&D (i.e. D&D 1E). I could add AD&D (1E) to the list as initially I played it without having the rules, only getting them after I'd been in a 1E campaign for a few months. I then played 1E for several years with my own set of rule books.

Almost never - I love any excuse to buy a role-playing book.

I've played plenty of "one session and then the GM never turned up again" adventures when I was in university, so if that counts :-

Traveller (of some description)
Cyberpunk
Time Lord
Star Trek the Next Generation

I'd add Rolemaster to the list, except we never actually gotto play it because the first (and only) session was spent trying to roll up characters.
