D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

It's telling me they dont want to have the discussion with me. Im not gonna make them.
While I agree, that was my original point of why play style gets targeted in order to avoid discussing the merits of why a mechanic was called bad while still defending the mechanic itself in a roundabout way that cannot be discussed.

I play with a ton of people who like playing D&D as a social activity but have zero interest in TTRPGs as a wider hobby.

These people are not rare, have you really not met any?
Have to agree. Most of my current players barely know any other RPGs exist, and that mostly from me telling them.

Soo its not that they are unaware... it's that they don't have an interest in other ttrpg's.

Exactly. Being the most popular game doesn't mean it's the best game, but that fact that so many people DO like it indicates it's also certainly above being considered a "bad game".
Indeed, I can imagine D&D (5e that is), with the right group of people, even being fun.

Especially if we manage not to spend 95% of the time in combat. (In contrast to the player who relievedly told the DM who ruined a brilliant RP session in which we, as a party, were finally figuring out some of what had been going on and figuring out a plan of action so that we didn't have to be reactive all the time, only to have the DM drop an invading force on our refuge city, "Whew! I thought we were going to go a whole session there without any fighting".

(Why yes, I deliberate made that sentence so convoluted, you're welcome.)

I think there are a lot of people who are aware of the existence of other roleplaying games, but have not tried them or really even thought about them, in the same way that there is a fairly significant amount of people who have only played board games like Monopoly and Sorry and never ventured further into the board gaming space. That's not an indictment by the way. It's people that are satisfied with what they have that aren't really curious to try or even understand other stuff.
