Points of Light: Setting search finalist?

So, here's a thought... Anyone care to wager a guess as to whether this whole Points of Light thing is one of the other two finalists (besides Eberron) which Wizards purchased the rights to during their setting search? AFAIK, they've never been revealed...

No, I strongly doubt it.

The whole point of the "points of light" default is that it's a default, and an implied setting, the same way Greyhawk (sort of) was in 3E.

They're not going to waste a setting on which they actually spent money as generic flavor. They're going to hold onto it until it's profitable to market it as a true setting.

I think originally it was a suggestion by George Bush, with some helpful revisions by Neil Young.

I'm not even sure what that's supposed to mean, but do be aware that this site has a policy against politics.

Lets also clarify that it was George Bush Senior, not the current president of the USA.

The reference to George Bush Senior saying "Thousand points of light" is no more political than "Ask not what your country can do for you", or "We have nothing to fear but fear itself", or "Veni Vidi Vici".

(all of those quotes would make excellent default settings... perhaps every setting should be based on a famous political speech or phrase).

Nothing inflamatory here, don't try to make it so.

If you read David Noonan's webpage (can't remember the url), one of his more recent personal campaigns had Tielings as PCs and it was a world of darkness with points of light. Mearl's Swordlands in Iron Heroes is similar (w/o the Tieflings.) So, I think we are benefitting from a mind-meld of these awesome designers who share similar thoughts on what would make a good default setting.

I wasn't trying to. If I'd have thought it was inflammatory, I wouldn't have responded, I'd have reported him. Just wanted to make sure nothing nasty grew out of it. :)

Incidentally, thanks for the history lesson. I did a quick google search for GB and Neil Young and nothing immediately obvious sprung up so the reference was completely lost on me.

Back to the topic on hand... I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the idea that this wasn't at least inspired by one of the finalists. After all, I'm sure WotC payed a lot of money for the settings, and they've just been gathering dust... Who knows, maybe they just wanted to buy the settings and disassemble 'em for parts like an old junker. Maybe we've been getting bits and pieces of the settings for years... Maybe the mini-setting in Tome of Battle was inspired by something there, who knows?

Certainly, I could see something like this being fleshed out a bit more. It would make a good setting, easy to define things on a larger scale while still keeping local stuff vague enough that a DM could futz with whatever needed afutzin'. Then along comes 4th Ed, someone goes, "Hey, you know what'd be great? Imagined if we boiled down Setting A into its most base element... Get rid of the back story, the kingdoms, etc, and we're just left with bastions of humanity in a dangerous, scary world. Like little points of light in the darkness."
