D&D 5E Polearm Master and Monk

Show me how you use a quarterstaff one handed, (it is RAW somehow, i know) I don't know who at wizards came up with the idea to make a simple stick one of the most powerful non magic weapons in the game.

I houserule quarterstaff to do 1d6 and be two handed use only. And it is a traditional monk weapon of course. The polearm mastery might apply to that one because a feat is a heavy cost but otoh you use both ends of a quartestaff by default, so if you keep the d8 as in RAW this is counted in imho.

This really should be changed by errata, to avoid handed duell style quarterstaff polearm master with shield rulius magistrarius build and such.
According to English fencing manuals from the 15th and 16th century the quarterstaff is one of best hand-to-hand weapons one can use. The techniques used with it are mirrored or often described in the same section as polearms, so including it with polearms is historically accurate.

As for wielding, it is held in two hands at low guard and is in general a two-handed weapon, although some of the attacks and parries are done with one hand letting go with either the leading or trailing hand.

Finally a real quarterstaff is not a stick, it is hardwoord and it is milled from the trunk of the tree not a branch (the "quarter" in quarterstaff refers to how it is sawed).

yea i know i exaggerated a bit for rethorics, but you also wrote that it is a two handed weapon. My beef with the RAW comes with it in comparison with spear and greatclub, analyse all three in RAW and what feats apply and damage and you will understand.

A spear does everything a quarterstaff can and more. In some edge cases bludgeoning damage may be preferable over piercing, but the reverse is also the case. They are otherwise identical, except that the spear is marginally more expensive and can also be thrown at a range of 30/120.

Check the errata on Polearm Master before you try to point to it as an advantage Quarterstaves have over Spears.

Spear works with PAM and is versatile as well and does the same damage as quarterstaff. Greatclub doesn't work with PAM, but it shouldn't. FWIW I don't think either of these weapons should do more damage than a quarterstaff.

Not sure I do understand.

Oh well, a spear if it hits like intended (with its sharp pointy end) does a lot more damage IRL than a quarterstaff.

Also a greatclub (let us assume 4Lbs of mass at the point of impact and a lever of 4 ft) will hurt you much more severe if it smashes down on your skull, than a Quarterstaff ( assume 1 Lbs x 6 ft.)

In both examples i know what i would prefer even though all of the choices mean pain.

If you take armor into account the gap might even be bigger.

Alas some expert shaolin or expert middleages quarterstaff weapon master might get some effects out of a bo/quarterstaff that your average joe cannot replicate, but so would it be with some expert on spear or greatclub.
