Cats don't need constant emotional support and they'll take care of themselves, but still will snuggle up with you at night. I don't mind hanging out with a dog, they're fun, but I wouldn't want to live with one. Sadly I'm allergic to cats (and dogs) and so can't live with one.

I love my dogs, but I'm a little reserved about dogs in general -- mainly because there are so many badly behaved ones. Likewise, I like most (but not all) cats.

On the other hand, fish and birds are useless. :)

Cat here. Throughout my life I've had a near-immortal beagle (Poly), her son (Manowar, a beagle/irish setter crossbreed with multiple personalities and the temper of a shark), a mixed breed (Megara, who died of rat poison a week after I found her), a daschound (Nicole, who could chew wood better than a termite)...

... but my current pet is Tyler, a striped gold cat (and the cat counter in all Counter Collections out there that have a cat!). Plus I have two images of Bast at home, and I am a tiger according to Chinese astrology!

How can you say that about birds? My Rainbow Lory talks up a storm and is great company. She is always asking me 'what you doing" When I put a new food in her dish she will eye and it ask 'what's this" Her favorite friuts are grapes and apples and she will ask for them by name she names other fruit grapples a word she made up. And if she really likes what she is eating she murmurs yum yum to herself. I am greeted with a cheery "good Morning" when I uncover her and a "nite nite" at bedtime.

My bare eyed cockatoo does not talk as much but she follows me around like a dog and cuddles like a cat. She loves to be petted and likes to watch tv and eat popcorn with me when we watch.

Hand fed parrots make really good pets. They are fun, loving and can live 30-60 years.

Non bird people just don't get it I guess.

I just had to put down my 19 year old Siamese and that wound is still fresh so I think I'll be passing on any other feline for awhile. I had that old cat before I was out of high school, a house, a wife, a child, and basically all the things in my life now. I miss the old guy.
On the bright side, we have two pugs and they are great dogs even if they look like they were hit in the face with a shovel. I'm with you, Jester.

Oh REEAAALLLYY?

I am a cat Overlord. I am master of the toys and litterbox. I decide who gets petted and who can sit on my lap or stomach. I am master of the fates of three.

Of course, a god or overlord of cats is really a slave to his felines.
Titles are: the feeder, he whos attention is most important, the holder of the brush, the worker of the knob, the toy engine, he whos lap is the warmest and the belly to knead.

at this time: 4 cats (1 is a stray that has been coming around)

I am a slave to them. :D

Wow. When I first saw this, I figure the huge love of cats was a statistical anomoly (not a big enough set). But it's staying there.

I agree with that, BTW, I just find it odd to see so many other cat people.

It's my observation that in general Cats are more like people really are, whereas Dogs are more like we think we are (or should be).

Professionally, I can have no favorites, but personally I like anything that is mellow and affectionate without being excessively needy.

Which is more often cats than dogs or exotic species.
