[Poly] What's happening to Polyhedron/Dungeon?

Hey Erik,

Good to see you at the helm. The changes are a good thing (tm). Here is to hoping for a stellar year at Dungeon and Dragon magazines.

BTW - the recent Dragon (Barbarian/Ranger/Fighter) issue has been one of the best since 3E came out and while I am not a fan of Gith stuff issue 100 was fairly butt kickin.

To the Poly complainers.

OF COURSE, they need to make the Dungeon crowd happy. It's like 70-30 in favor of Dungeon. Just like most people play DnD. It was stupid to think that the majority of gamers, who do not play in the RPGA and do not play other games than DnD, would want content others than DnD adventures.

I'll bet their sales go up because they are cutting Poly back.

And it is about time!
That's not what I've heard. Prior to the combo magazine, Dung was losing sale and on the verge of cancellation because of the decreasing readership. When Poly became a part of Dung, it attracted d20 gamers like me (although my first love is D&D, I'm much more open-minded than most of the core audience when it comes to playing d20 System games). They've seen a boost in the sale of Dung, although not enough to meet Wizards' expectation to continue financing the periodical department.

Just like you prior to the above business decision, I don't know how long before I will come to my senses and decided not to support the magazine now, if the Poly contents and pages begin to diminish.

See from our POV, what incentive is there for me to drop $7 on this magazine now?

So, it's now a matter of appeasement. I just want half of the magazine devoted to Poly (a fair compromise on my part), but the majority want the entire magazine devoted to Dung (no fair compromise whatsoever; if there is such a word existing in your vocabulary).

I strongly believe that we can achieve some sort of synthesis of the two magazines that makes most people happy with what they get. The previous mix was _not_ the correct one, and we'll keep tinkering until we get it right.
With all due respect, up until now, you've had your new Poly readers supporting you. But now, it has shifted.

It all comes down to you having to make the ultimate choice: either go 100% Dung or go 100% Poly. You can't please both of us. There is no other way. As a Poly reader, I am already displeased. I thought it was a fair compromise up until your announcement above, but now it's not.

So, choose your audience, Erik Mona. Good luck.

With d20 Modern, Star Wars, non-WOTC d20 system products, d20 mini-games and support for past d20 mini-games, I would say that there is more than enough material to justify at the minimum a bimonthly, stand-alone Polyhedron magazine.

...but rather than call for a bunch of links I'm willing to let bygones be bygones and chalk it up to general crabbiness and miscommunication. I'm not a mean guy (honest!), and I'm sure you're not, either...

i think you are confusing him with me.:D

but i was on your back at www.tsr.com and then www.wizards.com

you already know how i feel about it, so i won't pile on any more.;)

Oh, for cryin' out loud!

This is not a situation where for one side to win the other must lose. That's silly. I have little use for the Dungeon content, and really like the mini games. I'd be happy to see Polyhedron (as it is currently) as a seperate magazine, but I see no reason why they can't be combined. It's an awkward marriage, but if that's what it takes to keep getting nifty mini games, I'm all for it. You say "you can't please both of us". This would be true if it were a "both" situation, but neither the fans of Dungeon nor those of Polyhedron are monolithic, and acting as if they are just makes your opinion look ridiculous and uninformed.

"You can't please all of us" would be an accurate statement, but Erik darned well knows that.

The last couple of months of Polyhedron have been great stuff. If this level of quality keeps going (even with less material), I'm all for it.

Despite the fact that that was what Poly was before it was merged with Dungeon and was on the verge of financial collapse.

I think I must have read the fact that neither magazine could survive on it own at least 20 times in print in the last year.

I guess its one of those facts that no one believes.

strictly speaking from a scientific approach. it is only a fact if it can be tested and proven.

they didn't test it. it is therefore merely conjecture.
