Indeed. The OG 5e was intended to bring the anti-4e players back into the fold, so the 2014 devs engaged in all sorts of linguistic gymnastics in order to avoid any association with the prior edition. However, it would appear that Crawford et al have merely been biding their time to steer the game back towards the 4e style.
5e already was closer to 4e in many ways than it was to 3e.

It was just camouflaged.

Some things are just a bit uncovered now. But for 5.24 they actually stepped back a bit once again. Their playtest showed that some 4e things like replacing spells with powers is not regarded as good design (and I agree).

I loved polygon a few years ago, but quality of their articles really went down. I still like some of their stuff, especially on YT - but more for entertainment factor and less for quality journalism.

Polygon: D&D feels like it’s losing its edge. All those indie games need to take advantage!

Also Polygon, same writer: The new D&D edition is a treasure and the franchise’s high water mark!

Also Also Polygon: What’s an indie TTRPG? They have those things? Guess we’ll write another article about D&D.
Editorial staff does not consists of a single journalist with a single opinion. Go to NYTimes and you will find also "contradicting" pieces like that.

I have expressed this opinion numerous times over the years. When the 2014 books first came out, I could see right away that they were employing the “natural language” to obscure mechanics first introduced in 4e.
Hey, you're preaching to the converted. But there are poeple who absolutely insist that 5e borrows nothing from 4e.
