D&D 5E Premise for an adventure - Plane Inversion Device

I've had this concept for a while and thought it could be fun to flesh it out.

You know how there is a Helm of Opposite Alignment that inverts your alignment.

Now imagine a high level character building a device that works on a planar level (particularlly the upper levels) and is dedicate to changing things forever.

*********************************
1. Who would be capable of creating such a device?
2. Whom would deploy such a devices?
2. Why would they want to do such a thing?
3. Why would our usual set of plucky adventurers want to stop it or would they want to take it for themselves?
4. What would be the repurcussions of using such a device where?
5. whom would be allied in stopping such a device being deployed?

Cool idea.

1. God/Greater Fiend/Demon level entities.
2. Either side I would think.
3. Draw more power to their Alignment by shifting the balance to themselves.
4. Upset the balance of the multiverse. :D
5. Anyone not of that Alignment lol.

okay

my two cents

2. I don't think a great wheel inhabitants will be involved (either directly or indirectly using clerics or similar divine beings). There is a certain degree of familiarity and need for relative stability to not want to shake things up. Even the blood war has become familiar.

so it will be somebody from the prime plane that has an axe to grind, smart enough to study it, so I have a couple of ideas:

i. illithid. Ever wonder how they conquered the universe and destroyed it in some time lines. destroying the concept of alignment and an afterlife would be it. The worst part is they would take an almost clinical methodicalogy to it that would terrify demons and devils alike.

ii. Lich. perhaps they weren't always a bad person, but they experienced a loss and are unable to move on. Perhaps a loved one's soul was consumed by the outer planes and gets an axe to grind for generations.

iii. high level adventuring party. Perhaps they finally get to the level where they can be a threat and recognize the utter futility of the conflict. so they plan another action to change the universe for the better.

iv. Fey . the fey wild plays by different rules and perhaps they take this bizarre nature to reforge the universe in their own image.

3.
i. I see the possibility of a Light Yagami character that really does see making the world a better place. In fact I can see a devil corrupting them, and then immediately regreting their action.

ii. the other is of course vengence. Perhaps a Dracula Castlevania level burn out that wants to end it all, but doesn't want to just end the world, but all of it.

4. Well besides the usual (you can't end the universe. it's where we keep all our stuff), I would make it have a false lead to draw out and take the party on a universal tour. Despite the inner plane focus, this screams planescape adventure path.

5. so many repurcussions. This is a nuke for all attempt and purposes and the fact it exists would change everything.

Drop it on one plane in the abyss and suddenly the other 665 planes are attacking itself causing a window for the devils to achieve final victory.

drop it on hell and it ruins their logistics to cause the demons to invade.

hit both at the same time and the upper planes would be victorious...only to be terrified of the potential complications if it is used on them.

5. I'd almost do the equivelent of the chaard council in darksiders. Essentially an allied council to ensure that the status quo is maintained.

1. Asmodeus
2. Asmodeus
2a. "I want you to feel as I do about the multiverse"
3. Recent death of a loved one, who it turns out in secret was coerced into helping Asmodeus create the device (one of many such beings). An enchantment over the device prevents non-mortals from discovering its existence (it turns out the device is powered by mortals who have been "converted" to the cause)
4. Each plane transformed becomes another Hell
5. Anyone who doesn't want their plane turned into Hell. Problem is, the device prevents planar creatures from interfering with it. It is activated by, and can only be manipulated by mortals - because they can make a choice to be good or evil. Planar creatures who have "made their choice" cannot interfere with it due to pacts and magic placed on the device as part of its creation.

1. Who would be capable of creating such a device?
Some artificer tinkering in his shed, who stumbled upon it accidentally while trying to invent a better Portable Hole.
2. Whom would deploy such a devices?
Pretty much any PC if the session's running long enough.
2. Why would they want to do such a thing?
They misread the description.
3. Why would our usual set of plucky adventurers want to stop it or would they want to take it for themselves?
See above.
4. What would be the repurcussions of using such a device where?
Write a new campaign.
5. whom would be allied in stopping such a device being deployed?
The players in the room who are still sober.
