Project Sigil is the upcoming 3D VTT from WotC. From various Gen Con reports --
  • Creative Mode lets you prep on the fly or modify pre-made content
  • Assets from Baldur's Gate 3 are included, such as the characters as digital miniatures
  • Minis have multiple poses but are not animated
  • Spells are animated though
  • Uses Unreal Engine 5 (or 4, I've seen different reports)
  • Launch on PC, mobiles and consoles later
  • Closed Beta this fall--sign up here
  • DDB subscribers will have greater access

This is the 'creative mode' toolbox, apparently!

@Cergorach good post, that's why I mentioned .stl files as an example not even mentioned by wotc. Like UVTT support it's a reasonably well supported filetype that would provide GM's with options outside the wotc microtransaction garden of 3d models :D

they show off the 3d features of a 3d VTT, not its ability to import 2d tokens and maps, that already is a given
You do realize that 3d VTTs have existed for years right? An earlier post even gave specific examples. Those curiosities go rather unused because 3d vtt is very limiting in size and/or runs like a dog without a many thousand dollar god box like the 7(9?)* thousand dollar alienware laptops it was demo'd on during the creators summit where it was still "demanding".

it should be obvious that you cannot import physical minis.
Or any form of digital asset. We have literally been told zero details about how or if this will support the GM, Given the extreme player focus it's hard not to be skeptical at best.

* I honestly can't find the old creators summit tweets & such that questioned if a specific high x,xxx$ alienware was the target system requirements or if there were going to be more reasonable targets, only the earlier linked verbal shrug.

So, basically an update of the NWN engine with a bit more system agnostic thrown in? So the GM gets to take a week or more to build a set (or find and import a prebuilt) just for the players to spend 10 minutes there, kill everyone there, then burn it down and go somewhere else that they did NOT have prepared.

And yet it's all negative somehow....
Probably because those likely to be positive are not inclined to post until there is something to be positive about.

Other than the screenshots and some positive comment from the like of ProfessorDM from quite some time back. We know almost nothing of worth about the proposed VTT.
The one thing, I think many commentators here do not realize is how much of the rules automation on D&DBeyond is done by the Character Sheet or the Encounter Builder.
The current Maps tool has no built in automation other than to receive the roll from other sources on D&Dbeyond.
I have been a player for some time using the Maps tool and it is completely serviceable. The encounter tools could do with a lot of work and there is almost no support for campaign management.

That last part seems amazing to me. It seems doable and that it would make money.
