Proposal: PH2 and SORCERER

I really don't see a problem with the Expertise feats as written. Focused Expertise (from Dragon 375) solves the weapon+implement uses issue (swordmage, paladin, etc) buy giving a bonus to all attacks with a single given weapon instead of a weapon type (so Focused Expertise (Longsword) lets a swordmage get +1 with a longsword for both weapon and implement attacks).

I like that feat there. I was trying to come up with a sort of hybrid feat to do the same thing, but couldn't come up with anything that elegant.

Even if Dragon 375 only came out this month, if we choose to go with the bonus feat option and approve Focused Expertise when it comes time it can be proposed, it would all be set up before any of us actually reach level 5 and it matters.

Thoughts, anyone else?

Focused Expertise
Benefit: Choose a weapon that you can wield as an implement. You gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls with any implement or weapon power you use through that weapon. The bonus increases to +2 at 15th level and +3 at 25th level.

How does that help paladins? There aren't very many weapons that they can wield as holy symbols, if I understand properly. Bards are slightly better off, but there are still precious few songblades. Melee clerics are hosed. Really, I'm having trouble seeing who benefits from this, aside from swordmages. Multiclass warlocks or sorcerers, or MC wizards or druids with staffs, maybe.

Arcane characters are further helped by "Arcane Implement Proficiency." I suppose I was assuming there'd be something similar in Divine Power.

... Which is another feat tax on those characters. *sigh* Take two expertise feats, or take one and "X Implement Proficiency". Doesn't seem like much of a solution, actually ....

What if we made a special Expertise feat for paladins, avengers, clerics, (and bards??) that gives them expertise with a weapon group (like Weapon Expertise) plus their implement? Something like this, with variations for each of those classes:

Paladin Combat Expertise
Prerequisite: Paladin
Benefit: Choose a weapon group. You gain a +1 (expertise??) bonus to attack rolls with any weapon power you use with a weapon of that group. You also gain the bonus to attack rolls with any paladin implement. The bonus increases to +2 at 15th level and +3 at 25th level.

You know, this would be solved by a flat +1 bonus. Much less complicated, no need to worry about special feats, taxes, etc. Just give the PC's a flat bonus a 5/15/25 & put expertise feats where they belong, in the trash

Yes. There are already feats that show a dedication to one weapon type over the others. What do we need this one for?

The +1 to hit is flat bonus, regardless of race/creed/sexual orientation. So if you want to play an off-beat PC, this benefits you.

No different than a Dragonborn Fighter taking expertise, they've still got a better to hit than a halfling fighter taking the same expertise (all other things being equal).
