Protecting My Stuff!

Hey guys. I'm about to play in a d&d 3.5 game and my character has a lot of equipment that I really don't want to carry around everywhere. I don't want to have to carry a mule or horse around either because, well that animal would be a liability I'd have to watch over constantly (I'm playing a skill-based, assassin-like character). Besides, my guy's gonna have a bit of a weapon fetish and may collect weapons to hang on a wall. So I need a shack or house of some sort.

But I don't want my goods to get stolen while I'm gone and I just know the DM is the type to think of that. What would you guys suggest? I just basically want a place to put my stuff and be able to go back to without said stuff being cleaned out by random thieves. I thought of getting a guard dog to protect my goods, but then, I'd have to return constantly to feed it, which would suck, especially if I was on a long-term adventure.

Any help? Just to give some info, we're level 3 and our starting money is 2000gp. I don't want to spend a whole heck of a lot of any place and security measures I buy but I'll do what I have to.

Hire staff, pay off the local thieve's guild, speak to the curator of the Museum of Smashing/Cutting/Slashing History...

There are plenty of things you can do. How much money do you plan on investing?

I was afraid you were gonna say that.

Well, I didn't want to have to pay a whole heck of a lot. I may have to do just exactly that though. As for how much, I really don't know at this point. But I don't want to be knee-deep in debts to where I can't concentrate on buying stuff I want to buy like weapon enhancements and such. But I'm willing to pay a hefty price if it means protecting what I do have. Also, I'm not sure if the starting city is gonna be a place I want to invest too much in. I may stay here, I may not. Events in the game may force me to have to buy property elsewhere and move things as needed. The DM hasn't provided a lot of details yet of the settings, political climate, or even the focus of what we're doing yet. I'm basically planning ahead but the game isn't likely to start for a little while at least until the DM can get some time to map out the settings.

Have a wizard put a Wizard's Mark on all your stuff... then just leave it in your house/cabin whatever...

Yeah I'm hoping I can get the other PCs to help. Having a wizard's help would be really really handy. Not sure if I can count on that though. Its still very early and we're still gathering players. And considering the past, I'm not sure if the others will cooperate well, lol.

I mostly made this thread to get people to throw out some ideas.

And god, I wish I could get a bag of holding right now. 2k starting gold isn't enough money ><. That was a good idea though!

Will your adventures allow you to return to a home base location or will you be forever travelling? The cost to purchase and upkeep a home might not be practical for you right now.

... Emphesis on right now. Can you keep a long term view, where you can afford this arrangement at level 5? Perhaps you only carry 5 daggers on your self today, but 2 levels-and-extra-wealth from now you're where you'd like to be, haversack included.

When your not in, have a floor safe? Burry it and store things, granted you wont achieve quite what you want, at least you can keep your items until you can ward your house?

If anyone can get past magic wards, there probably worth hunting down, and give you some fun chasing them up and making them pay.
