Pterra

So, apparently Pterra has no cold regions at all? Didn't think the first few posts denied the possibility, but meh. Post fixed.

New contribution:
The barbarian Dal-Heggoth have long been a scourge of the Draakhin and Banasti, who are often raided by the barbarians for weapons, armor, fine drinks, and bloody trophies. Shrunken gnome heads and lizardfolk hands are often worn on Dal-Heggoth belts and necklaces. On the few occasions where Dal-Heggoth clans go raiding other human and orc territories, they often take prisoners to become part of their clans, so the Dal-Heggoth have a variety of mixed bloodlines.

Although the largest mammalian species from other continents have not gotten a successful foothold on Pterra, other mammal species, typically smaller ones, have managed to survive and evolve into new forms, as they are dealing with an entirely different ecosystem for the most part.

There are kangaroos and koala bears and even strange creatures that lay eggs but look like a hybrid of a duck and beaver ...

Of course this creature known to the goblins as the Jimmialong is in fact an evolved Therapsid not a true mammal. Large dire versions are kept by the goblins as pets and are effective 'watch dogs'. The poison spurs of the Dire Jimmialong are often used as weapons.

Perhaps the most successful large mammal in Pterra is one of the least-seen.

The so-called drop bear (it is actually a dire koala) is an expert climber capable of remaining still and silent for hours, hidden in the canopy of the trees until a grazing dinosaur -- or, in lean times, anything but the most dangerous predators -- wanders beneath it.

It then drops onto its prey from above, attacking with all four sets of claws and a vicious bite.

Few victims of a drop bear attack live to tell the tale ...

Urazniak, the Last Bastion of Vrizka, is home to the only kobolds of Pterra. The kobolds of Pterra are known as Vrizka, and evolved from small dinosaurs some time after the fall of the Draakhin ancestors. Most kobolds were wiped out in the great War of One Hundred Banners, but the surviving kobolds bunkered down in the mountain fortress-city of Urazniak. For several generations have they remained in Urazniak, venturing out only for occasional raids when they have a bad growing season. Vrizka hold deep grudges against most other races, and dinosaurs, for destroying most of their people so shortly after their rise to power and intelligence.

The Vrizka have some differences from the standard kobold; notably the brightly coloured feather tuft which crowns the heads of the males, an opposable digit on the foot (allowing them to grasp with their feet) and their thin and elongated fingers, the last finger on each hand being extremely long and apparently for collecting insects from holes. These adaptions assist the Vrizka when climbing.

In a few Vrizka there is even signs of webbing between the last finger and the hand which may be a vestigial wing, however no evidence of winged kobolds has yet been found

The Vrizka have a long standing relationship of animosity and agression against the Gnomes of the deep forests that border the Vrizka holds. These gnomes that call themsleves the Graka-ru evolved from a small mammal that competed with the Kobolds for habit and to a degree served as a prey creature to them. Gnomes evolved a deft and cunning intelligence and have domesticated a species of small raptor, about the size of a large dog, which they call a Swift Scale.

Gnome cavalry is feared by Vrizka footmen as the Graka-ru's mounts not only carry the mail-armored and lance-wielding gnomes across the battlefield at a rapid pace, the swift scale mounts are a formidable foe themselves, each one at least the equal of a Vrizka footman. It is believed by some scholars and war historians that the only reason the Graka-ru have not wiped out the Vrizka is that the Vrizka out number them enough to make a protracted war a course leading to inevitable defeat. Other point out the Vrizka also make an excellent buffer-state between the Graka-ru's forest holds and the steppe-dwelling catfolk barbarians.

Over the Khan Desert that stretchs from the steppe of the catfolk lands to the eastern coast legend holds a great island can be seen hovering hundreds of feet in the air. Rumors also persist of strange oasis in the deep desert where the water does not sit in the open rather it floats in amorphous balls several feet above the ground, as if gravity had no sway over the waters.

Near the exact center of the Khan Desert lies a ring of giant pillars. Each pillar is 100 feet tall and 10 feet in diameter. These pillars are formed of a strange substance, niether metal nor stone (DM secret, it is ceramic) and thousands of these form a perfect pentagram a mile across in the geographic center of the desert. Thier purpose is completely unkown.

Near the eastern coast is a blasted ruin of a city extending all the way in to the ocean. The ruins are burned and broken and seem to be of a civilization in it's early period. Near the outskirts of what would have been the ancient walls of the city can be found strange statues carved of rocksalt that seem to depict people in ancient clothing styles, faces frozen in terror.

Aarakocra have some manner of ancient pact with gnomishkind, and often assist folk such as the Banasti and Graka-ru against attacks by other humanoids. Gnomes are the most frequent trade partners of aarakocra, and the bird-folk usually get the best deals out of these trades. The pact does not seem to require aarakocra intervention when gnomes attack other races, only when gnomes are under attack, and thus far other races do not know if gnomes would come to the bird-folk's aid in battle. The nature of the pact and its origins is unknown to all but a few gnomes and aarakocra.
