Questions on Charge and Spring Attack

I'd say that you'd be able to move in without provoking an AO from your target, but part of charging involves coming to a complete stop -- so you could move in, but you'd then stop right next to the guy and not be able to move back out until next round.

You'd need some sort of Ride-by Attack variation (run-by attack?) to actually let you charge someone and keep on going past them without AOs.

As a side note, tumbling can't work during charging simply because tumbling is a move-equivalent action, while charging is a full-round.

I agree with you on charging (but the Sage does not).

Tumbling is NOT a move-equivalent action, but is done as part of normal movement. One might reasonably state that movement during a charge is either normal or not - though I lean towards the "not" side since you are moveing more recklessly than normal.

Spring attack normally allows you to move in any manner; bouncing back, spring past them, or even running in circles around them. Charge mandates that all of your movement in the round be in a straight line (you have to be moving very fast) and that you attack at the end of the movement.

We could simply assume that the combination would just allow you to attack at some point other than the end, as it does in most situations. So, since a charge in my mind does not in any way necessarily end in a complete stop (but maybe I just watch too much anime,) The character is simply springing past their opponent at full speed and slashing them as they pass. Works for me, and doesn't seem unbalancing. For those who think that this combination is broken, remember: enemies can set ready actions, too!

... Nice for an NPC guerilla monk but in my experience this is a worthless tactic in a party.

You may be right. We've got an Elven Fighter in our party who has managed to really anger the dwarven NPC by using Spring Attack in every battle. Basically, he jumps in, hits, and jumps out.. leaving the dwarf to be attacked by everyone.

Makes for fun role-playing though ...
