D&D (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

what to do?
make all casters like warlock?
could be an idea
With the way most people play, perhaps there should be a variant rule that makes everyone a pact caster.

bring on the goblin ninjas
In my setting, I leaned into the slight Japanese flavor that D&D put on hobgoblins and made all hobgoblins use anime powers. They mostly favored the Big Three where the leaders get the powers of Naruto (goblins), Bleach (hobgoblins), and One Piece (bugbear).

"You see 100 goblins dressed in black and dark blue armed with swords, darts, and short daggers."

spell point variant
halve the number of spell points of full casters.
6th-9th level spell slots still limited to once per Long rest
regain all on short rest.
short rest 1 min long

2 or 3 short rest per Long rest.

Why should you limit that. That is sustainable for very little number of rounds.

It is not a limit. Most of the time it matters you are concentrating on a spell and can't use either it or Hunter's mark anyway.

When it happens that you are in a fight and not concentrating on another spell then you spam it so it does not go to waste. That is not often though at tier 3. Generally, the most power you have in the class comes from concentration spells (both class and subclass), and their use precludes Favored Foe or Hunter's Mark.

As I have said many times on this post, I did not regularly run out of FF at medium to high level and I would use it whenever it would help.

It might be an upgrade for games where you do only do one encounter per day.

No I am talking about 7+ encounters per day.

In such games takong anything besides a full caster that blows through all high level spells in that encounter

A 13th level Ranger has a minimum of 11 spells to cast not counting free Hunter's Mark. Add in species, feats and subclasses and it can be significantly more than that. You are never going to be able to "blow through" even 11 spells in one combat. You normally are not going to blow through 11 Ranger spells in 7 combats unless you are purposely wasting them .... and if you are doing that then you are not attacking a whole lot.

That can change if you have something like 5E Divine Smite from a multiclass that is spell-slot intensive, but the best Ranger spells are concentration, meaning you don't typically "blow through" them in combat at all on most adventuring days.

I used to think that, but I am starting to think less so.

The new 2024 Ranger is less popular than the Tashas Ranger was.
Favorability, strength, and popularity do not correlate.

The D&D Ranger has always been a popular and heavyly played class irregardless of how good it is.

A lot of people as you see on this thread literally just one power boosts. Nothing to do with flavor, just power boosts.

Ironically the 2024 can blow through spells fast as Hail of Thorns and Lightning Arrow can both be

  1. Triggered on a miss
  2. Do not have concentration
So technically anytime a Ranger misses an attack they can just decide that they're arrow explodes in thorns of lightning.

Player: I shoot at the vampire. 10 + 11. 21 is that a hit. Okay 5+3+3+3 damage. I shoot him again. 2. Darn Hail of Thorns save for 7. ITS MY SPELL I DO WHAT I WANT!

Not a very efficient way to use your spell slots but an archer Ranger could get very AOE spammy if they know that the mostly only runs two encounters per long rest.

That is interesting. But if you did not even use ff more than 2 or 3 times, then over 7 encounters it is probably less than 1 DPR. So going down to hunter's mark makes no difference anyway.

Or like... more class features that fit their theme than 'hunters mark and hunter's mark accessories'.
Yeah, but they usually want class features that either harm another ranger's theme or makes the ranger even blander.

It's tough to support most of the themes without stripping ranger of all flavor... without creating new spells.
