Ranger - likes and dislikes?

If you don't mind spending $1.85 for it, Wilderness Traps isn't bad. It allows setting woodland traps (mostly snares, deadfalls, pits, spikes, nets, and limb-traps) at one hour/CR, so long as you have a knife, handaxe, and perhaps a spade (for the pits). Cost is 0 GP, although spending 10 GP on some items (snare wire, nails, etc) will decrease the time.

It's not bad! I give it four out of five stars.

That's why I prefer D20 Modern. Swashbuckler-style characters dodge! Tough characters take hits. The difference is obvious and flavorful. (Besides, how does healing magic fix a "near miss"?)
The positive energy refill's your used up luck quota?

Like I said, not perfect, but low hp+dodge bonus had its own issues.

The Le is getting a lot of good feedback on the Monk and the Barbarian, and the Ranger is one of my favorite classes, so I'm jacking his thread idea! :] Concerning 3.5, what do you like and dislike about the Ranger?

Of the 3.5 version the special abilities are the best part, except HiPS.
I also like the Ranger spells in general (as I did in 3.0).

I do not like the 6 skill points per level (too many), the d8 HD (not too low, but why?), the new rules for favored enemies (too strong, too flexible), and the hide in plain sight special ability (some practical problems). Overall I find it too good compared to other classes.

I am much more fond of the Tolkienesque concept of Rangers (more warrior, less scout), so the 3.0 version is better for me. It only misses the 3.5 tracking bonuses.

Personally, I'm pretty happy with the Ranger, although I haven't felt a need to play one yet. It does sound like the animal companion is pretty weak at higher levels, which is a shame. But otherwise it seems like a nice blending of the fighter's strengths with a more skill/outdoors orientation.

Hey, TheLe, did you ever get Scorpian Queens finished? I loved the copy of Spider Kings you sent me - very tasty :)

Nope. I haven't even started it yet. But I've already mapped out how the Scorpian Combat Style would work.

Next books will be Neo Fighters: The Fire Knight, Neo Barbarians: The Totem Scion, and Neo Clerics: The Opus Priest. I am co-writing N.Fighters, while other authors are taking a crack at the other two.

But I do want to get back to the Neo Rangers. It is easily the most fun class to write about, and was a heck of alot easier than Neo Monks: The Dragonlord (available now at www.TheLeGames.com)

The ONLY thing a fighter does well is fight. He has no spells, no special abilities, nothing. The only thing a fighter does better than anyone else is hit things. Why does everyone feel that classes that don't fight as well as fighters are somehow weaker? Doesn't matter if it's barbarians, monks or even rangers.
In the case of Monks it's becauase all they do is fight too. And they do it worse than the Warrior, or a barbarian with no rage and a -4 to constitution.

[imager]http://www.thele.com/TheLeGames/images/tn/NeoRangers_TheSpiderKing_tn200w.jpg[/imager]All Hey folks!

This thread has been great! I've really enjoyed reading all your thoughts and opinions on the matter.

I went ahead and sent out a dozen free copies of my Neo Rangers: The Spider King book to some random posters here.

Enjoy!

Hey, thanks, TheLe! I got one of those, wondered what was up... I thought maybe you sent me a review copy because I reviewed Unorthodox Rangers, and just bought 17 Ranger Spells (which is another four stars, from me). Now we know!

What's up with the Spider King's Arachnid combat style, though? TWF isn't bad enough? He takes -2 on all attacks AND damage, but gains +1 (later +2) AC and a 10% (later 15%) chance to turn one hit/round into a miss, instead? Seems like a worse combat style to me!

Also, the cover shows him TWFing, but no mention is made of that in the class description, is it? Does the Spider King fight with all four limbs, or what?

I actually LIKE the animal companion class feature, but at 1/2 the druid's progression and without the druid's animal buffing spells, it's simply too weak to be worth having. If my wolf companion is purely flavor text, leave him in the flavor text.

Well, here's a question for everyone: If the Ranger's Animal Companion was at (Ranger Level - 2) instead of 1/2 of, would it be worthwhile, being only two levels behind the Druid's? Is it still too weak?

And what "animal buffing spells" is the Ranger missing? He has (Greater) Magic Fang & Animal Growth.
