I recently Snagged a Hardback Copy of Goodman Games "EtherScope". Which is a d20 modern derived setting, where the world is trapped in steampunk level technology, but has advanced it beyond all rational means to include a kind of steampunk internet: "The Etherscope" wherein people are transported, mentally, into an interconnected realm of shadow beasts and Lovecraftian horrors. This is a greatly detailed setting, meant to inspire the pulp comic hero in all of us. There's a wide range of playable races (genetic tinkering is widespread, resulting in man / dogs and man / rats being created to fill specific roles in society) lots of classes (Everything from half-machine "Enginaughts" to madman inventor "Savants") and plenty of room for improvisation. Most classes in this game feature a wealth of skill points (averaging 5 + Int, the Savant caps out at 9 + int). Lots of skills adapted to the setting too.
Now, the primary issue i have with this game is that, while ALL classes poess a good number of skill points, their hit dice are lousy! Their mightiest "tough guy" class, the "Enginaut", only has d10 hit points per level. This is in a game where guns do 2d6 damage, and more powerful weapons are more easily crafted (such as death rays and whatnot). Also, the game only offers 10 levels of advancement. Meaning that it's much more difficult to get up to that epic level of play.
However, it's an excelent setting, and offers great quantities of "things to borrow" for other settings. I reccomend the cramped little book for it's alternative history alone
