Seems to me like people believe opinions related to RPGs and fantasy are all the more "cool" or "valid" the more extreme they appear. "This is so unbelievably cool. That is so sucky I can't even throw it up."

Enough already! Extreme opinions are just not credible to me. Am I the only one to believe that?

It's a little silly to get upset or uptight about this stuff - it's a hobby enjoyed in the company of friends, and as long as everyone's having fun, you're probably doing it right. We(and our groups) all have gaming styles/genres we prefer, and there's nothing wrong with that -- just don't come off as if your preferences are the One True Way.

Because, at the end of the day, it's a game. And your One True Way, isn't.

The things I get tired of are a) edition wars, and b) people who complain about companies adding more options to the game. (Hint: if you don't want the added stuff, don't buy the books!)

Ok, done with my little rant now. :)

Arn't those different sides of the same coin?

I'd suggest to (i) ignore that kind of threads and/or (ii) spend some time away from the messageboard. Works wonders :).

Not at all! As a matter of fact, if someone throws me a completely one-sided argument in favor of or opposing a particular product, i am less liekly to believe them in whole.

For instance,

I recently Snagged a Hardback Copy of Goodman Games "EtherScope". Which is a d20 modern derived setting, where the world is trapped in steampunk level technology, but has advanced it beyond all rational means to include a kind of steampunk internet: "The Etherscope" wherein people are transported, mentally, into an interconnected realm of shadow beasts and Lovecraftian horrors. This is a greatly detailed setting, meant to inspire the pulp comic hero in all of us. There's a wide range of playable races (genetic tinkering is widespread, resulting in man / dogs and man / rats being created to fill specific roles in society) lots of classes (Everything from half-machine "Enginaughts" to madman inventor "Savants") and plenty of room for improvisation. Most classes in this game feature a wealth of skill points (averaging 5 + Int, the Savant caps out at 9 + int). Lots of skills adapted to the setting too.

Now, the primary issue i have with this game is that, while ALL classes poess a good number of skill points, their hit dice are lousy! Their mightiest "tough guy" class, the "Enginaut", only has d10 hit points per level. This is in a game where guns do 2d6 damage, and more powerful weapons are more easily crafted (such as death rays and whatnot). Also, the game only offers 10 levels of advancement. Meaning that it's much more difficult to get up to that epic level of play.

However, it's an excelent setting, and offers great quantities of "things to borrow" for other settings. I reccomend the cramped little book for it's alternative history alone :)

Now see? that was an honest review. i liked things about the game, i disliked things about the game, but i still reccomended it.

Compare it to this:

Etherscope RULES! I can totally play as a cyborg, i'm sorry "Enginaught" with all these brass-and-steel mechanical limbs and be all "I'll Be Back" and "Dead or Alive you're coming with me!" So what if the game is shorted, it's still great.

good post

Odhanan, you are now my favorite poster of all time. I don't post here often for this same reason.

Others, flame on! (and flame me for what I just said)

I don't think anyone in this thread has been flaming Odhanan. My suggestion was serious. Don't let extreme positions creep up on you and set you in a bad mood. It's a game. If people throw a fit about it, it's their way to get rid of their frustrations. Don't let their frustrations cloud your mood. If you are tired of it, you are most probably just bored. Taking a break is a good medicine against that :).
