I sold my 5e books in 2020 and did not play the game since then. I bought 5e 2024 (alternate covers) and played a level 1 to 5 solo campaign with 4 characters. It was fun, felt familiar but with a few changes (like backgrounds) which I liked. I will continue their story later. I give it an 8 based on that.

I gave it a 3.

On a personal level, I'm just finding it less fun for me. I have played it ever since it came out with two separate DMs.

This isn't based on any single rule or aspect of the 2024 edition, but in aggregate I am just not a fan. I'm just happier with 2014 and I see myself playing that and other games instead.

I haven't a fully-formed opinion about it yet, as I've only skimmed a couple of the books and never played in a 5.5E game. As I've never played in a 5E game either, 5E couldn't reflect negatively on my opinion of 5.5. I've made a character, which seemed to involve a lot of flipping back and forth in the PHB, but it was fun.

I had been curious about it, as well as feeling very nostalgic, so I put the 2024 PHB on a wishlist, and later received it as a gift (last year).

Prior to that, I'd last played in the early aughts using 3E (2001-2006).

Before that, it was 1st Ed AD&D from about 1984-1987, and then B/X before that from 1982-1983.

I hope you get a chance to play it and enjoy it.

My biggest complaints requires killing some sacred cows.

1: ability scores and ability modifiers are unnecessary confusing. Pick one. You don't need both.

2: attack and damage should be combined in to 1 roll. (I.e. d20+weapon-AC).

3: attacks, skills, and saves should use the same rules. (I.e. attacker rolls vs static defenses. Or maybe both roll and see who is higher).

Streamline the underlying engine.
Otherwise I like it.

When did Beyond launch? Was it in 2014? I dont recall it much talked about back then. Though, I do hear about it often now, and think EN World folks often underrate its use.
Around GenCon in 2017: by 2022, WotC had bought Beyond then started selling physical books directly through Beyond.

The D&D marketplace in 2014 and 2024 are just radically different worlds.

That's basically the Cosmere RPG.

I can't really grade it per se as to me it's still an updated 5E and it's backwards compatible regardless.

The things I REALLY do like, however, is that some bad spells were buffed, the classes got some nice updates/loving (looking at you Fighter-Champion/Monk), and I love how the subclasse pages/breakdown look.

Things I don't like, honestly? Really don't like Fighting Styles being feats now and somewhat how backgrounds work(don't mind the feat choice but I low key miss the open ended features of backgrounds).

Also the alt covers were great. (Now can I please get/find an alt DMs Guide that isn't 200 bucks or the price of a Cubicles 7 limited edition cover please)?

I was initially very skeptical of D&D2024, but in the meantime it has become my system of choic. But:
  • It's an improvement of D&D2014 mechanics? Yes, by a bit
  • It's groundbreaking like D&D2014? Not at all
  • Art and atmosphere are better then D&D2014? Not at all, but I admit that some pieces of art in the PHB and the entire MM art are great

So, D&D2014 was a 10+/10 game, D&D2024 is in my opinion a 7/10 game
