3, Just because the story was cool. To play them just wasn't any fun. What happened if (imagine you're in sixth grade) the party veered off the path of the novels????

I played through the series before reading the books (only the first one was published by the time we finished IIRC, yes I'm old). I liked 'em quite a bit, right up until the end - the finale was a little silly, as I recall. I was less impressed with them on reading them later, our DM way back when did a pretty decent job of smoothing over the rough spots. So overall I rated it a seven.

I'm about to run them in 3.5 with a whole different take and starting point. The places will be familiar, some of the events will be familiar, but it's going to be a whole different ball of wax than the novels, or the original adventures we played back when they were released for 1E.

That said, they are great source material.

A horrendous series that was imitated too much. I gave it a two because hey, people didn't know it better back then, plus some dungeons are almost likable.

I ran the entire series a few years ago (2nd edition) using some custom made characters and a few of the pre-gens. No one had read the novels and they were all new players. Everybody had a blast and to date it is still considered the best campaign we ever ran. The modules needed some work here and there but they did include some great dungeons, a cool battle on dragons, cool villains, a bit of comic relief now and then, ... Nobody ever complained about railroading. For us the modules had everything a good campaign needs.

It kept us going for 2 years, playing once or twice week. Once we had finished it I immediately started looking for something like it. In the end I had to wait till last year or so for the Dungeon Adventure path to find anything decent.

Good times.

I think the Dragonlance modules set the standards for what an epic campaign was supposed to be. No longer were dragons just creatures that somehow fit in the lower levels of a dungeon. They were deadly creatures that were hard to kill unless you had a Dragonlance. I was thrilled to see Dragonlance get the d20 treatment.

Long live the Lance!

I loved Dragonlance back when these were out. I loved the novels as well. But despite trying to play the first 4 time and time again, they never really worked. We tried playing our own characters, we tried playing the Dragonlance characters, but it never worked for us. I gave it a 4 - it was not very playable in our experience back then.
