Cool- I posted in my review of "The Long Game" that that episode seemed like it deserved a multi-parter, and that it would have been a stronger episode for it. Well, here's the sequel. The title of that eponymous episode is explained here, and we are left with one of the most amazing cliffhangers of the season- one of the strongest cliffhangers I've seen in a long time, actually.

Kind of interesting how the writers have still managed to maintain the serial nature of the former Doctor Who series, but by splitting up the stories into non-sequential multi-part episodes. A different take, and a fresh one.

The episode itself was different- fairly strong throughout, though with some slow or underplayed moments. Was really shocked about what happened to Rose, and it is official- I love Captain Jack Harkness. Best line (paraphrased)-

Robot: "A laser pistol? Where did you get that?"
Naked Jack: "You don't want to know."

I also loved his- "Ladies, your ratings just went through the roof"- line. And seeing him pull the heroics he did. I really hope Harkness returns next season, if not as a companion, then as a sporadically returning character. Give him another time machine!

The episode would have been stronger had we not had the teaser glimpse of the secret baddies in the preview for last week, but it still was very strong, and ended with a bang.

Eccleston really does an amazing job of capturing the Doctor's utter enmity towards the Daleks- who are truly one of the only enemies of the Doctor, aside perhaps from the Master, to have earned his wrath. Not even the Cybermen, I'd say, have committed the atrocities on the scale of the Daleks that would make the Doctor so utterly unable and unwilling to believe in possibility of their redemption.

Again, impressed with how well the continuity of the season has been. They've really written a tight series, and it is apparent that everything was well planned out prior to even filming, plot-wise; it reminds me of the first season of 24, where a deliberate beginning and ending were set in motion, and tons of the little steps along the way were already planned as well. That, or just about any of Whedon's Buffy seasons. They're going to have a tough time making the next season comparable to this one.

Anyway, enough from me. Loved the episode and am chewing my fingernails to the bone in anticipation of the finale. Looks like we'll get all the answers to the burning "Time Wars" questions, as well as a few surprises.

Finally, a last spoiler question for those of you who've seen the episode.
Anyone else think that the Master- possibly Dalekized, from the voice- may be the menace responsible for saving the Daleks during the Time Wars? Possibly in yet another effort to save his own life, since he long ago passed his final regeneration? Guess we'll have to find out...

I thought it was fantastic. By a brilliant stroke of luck I hadn't seen the trailer from the previous week, so the final revelation was a complete shock. The story was great, what happened with Rose was genuinely shocking.

I guess some of the tv show references will be lost on non-UK audiences, but I'm sure the principle will carry through just fine.

I'm embarrased to admit that I'd not really twigged the whole Bad Wolf thing until it was pointed out to us - Doh!

One of the things that I *really* like is that they are making it plain that Rose and the Doctor have travelled to lots of places in space and time, but the TV show only covers the dramatic ones. Not every journey has been a disaster, and that is nice.

Regarding your spoiler question at the end - that was the first thought that had sprung into my mind too...

Cheers

While I could have done without the references to present-day television programmes - I find it hard to believe that in the far future anyone will know or care about 'The Weakest Link' - I still enjoyed the programme overall. Rose's apparent death was quite a shocker; they had me convinced! And I loved the Doctor's response to the baddies at the end. Captain Jack's moments were a lot of fun too. I can't wait for next week's episode, although I'm saddened that it will be Eccleston's last. At least he's going out with a bang.

I don't know about you, Cthulhudrew & Plane Sailing, but I think that voice at the end was someone much more closely associated with BBEG than what you're suggesting. :D

WizarDru, Valanthe, and myself watched it last night and in regards to the spoiler...

I guess it may be a Dalekcized Master while WizarDru's money was on Davros.

To quote paraphrase WizarDru when he was talking about Justice League Unlimited:

"I love the new Doctor Who because they made it for meeeeeeee!!!"

Scorch Out

I really enjoyed it. I, too was almost convinced that
Rose was dead
even though I new better. As for the
daleks at the end... I would guess Davros. Just curious - what pointed you towards the Master? Didn't even occur to me and doesn't really make sense... or does it?

Can't wait for the finale.

Apparently Ecclestone will be around for the Christmas special... although I imagine we'll see the handover to the new guy in that episode.

It bugged me too, at first. I had assumed that the Doctor would wind up in the present-day Big Brother house...

But upon further consideration, the absurd notion that BB, What Not to Wear, and Weakest Link would still be in production 198,000 years from now, and all involve homicide, filled me with delight. I find that SF usually works better as satire than as serious extrapolation.

My problem with the ep. revolved around why/how the phrase "Bad Wolf" got grafitied onto most of human history. Then a friend just pointed out that it qualifies as a 'repeated meme', and thus the repeated mentions don't all need to signify anything.

So I’m in America and do not have the luxury of watching the New Who. Can someone spoil this episode for me, or at least point me to where I can find some nicely detailed episode spoilers.

What happened to Rose?

Here's a quick synopsis for you: http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/GuidePageServlet/showid-34391/epid-407904/

I'm in America, too, but thanks to the Intarwebs, we've been watching the show the next day after broadcast. Thank you, Intarwebs.

Here's what happened to Rose:
Each of the Tardis' inhabitants was grabbed by a transmat beam and teleported to the station. The Doctor got trapped in the Big Brother house, Captain Jack in 'What not to Wear' and Rose trapped in 'Weakest Link'. Losers in each game were distintegrated, and the Doctor arrived to rescuse Rose when she had just failed in the final round. Pandemonium ensued, and Rose ran to warn Jack and the Doctor that the host 'Anne'-Droid (voice by the actual host of Weakest Link, Anne Robinson) had a disintegrator ray...and was vaporized just inches from them.

Of course, not long after that:
Jack figured out that it was a disintegration beam at all, but another transmat beam, and that it was teleporting the losers to...somewhere. Which is when they discovered the fleet.

The closing of this episode was one of the greatest moments in Doctor Who history, to me. Thank you, RTD.
