Well, since the Movies, Books, and TV forum always has "Rate this movie" polls, I figured I'd try one for Doom 3 here, since a lot of people here seem to be playing it.

I gave the game a 10/10. Great atmosphere, a good storyline, lots of polish, and just plain fun to play. About the only thing I didn't like is that the multiplayer mode is only 4 players, but since I don't have broadband I'll only be playing multiplayer sparingly.

I think it blows. All this time building a brand new engine to zip off graphics so spiffy it will make your eyeballs bleed and they make it so dark you can't even SEE all the spiffy graphics, much less make out where it is you need to go in game. And that's even BEFORE the introduction is finished, "hell breaks loose" and all the lights go out. At this point I consider it one of the biggest wastes of my money ever even though I haven't even made it through the first level. It feels masochistic to even bother because the annoyance and frustration is so high.

A simple "gamma" slider like virtually every FPS has had since the dawn of time is all I'd need to make me happy. Oh, there's a "brightness" slider that does precisely squat. I consider it an insult to my backside. Wake me up if a patch ever fixes it. I certainly don't intend to play it until such time. The only thing keeping me from throwing it in the trash right NOW is the fact that I was stupid enough to pay the $55 for it rather than read a review or try to find an even modestly discounted price. I hold out a stupid hope that I MIGHT be able to get some value out of it later.

Yes, being able to SEE the enemy that's 10' in front of you in a FPS is that important. If Half Life 2 simply shows up on a shelf and installs without eating a hard drive it will almost certainly outsell this aborted coaster 20:1.

Rated it 3. I'm probably being generous. I think I may FORCE myself to play through in the hopes that it bloody damm well get better fast, but they lost my enthusiasm for the entire game in the first 5 minutes. I don't care how "scary" they think making everything impossible to see is. From my POV it just makes it infuriating. Shadows and Fog is one thing, but all I see here is Kingsford charcoal black, with just enough wan, gray wall or floor texture shown under a half-watt bulb to prove that my Radeon 9600 hasn't simply crapped on me.

I gave it an 8. Good but not great. My one main beef is you can't hold the pistol in one hand and flashlight in the other. I understand they were going for a scary atmoshere, ect.. But if you were really in a situation where things are come out from dark places and trying to kill you, you would not put your guns away

You mean you haven't got the Duct Tape patch yet? Over at Planetdoom there are quite a few mods you can apply to make for different gaming experiences. If you get scared of running around by yourself there is even a mod that has a security bot follow you through the whole game. I want to get the one that makes the shotgun act like it did in Doom 1 and Doom 2.

Gave it a 7 -

The Bad:
It is a FPS period, yes it looks good but so do so many other games.
Okay, it is a re-make of DOOM, nothing new in plot or story.
Design and game engine, for requirements rather expected more in CGI. I also have to fault the design team for no flashlight on guns or night vision.
Monster are on top of you: Game still depends a lot just walking into the monster or using hidden compartments to release them on top of you.

The Good:
It is a FPS, it is addictive.
Suspense and Erie: It still makes me jump, music, lights, flickering, backgrounds all build this up.

Things I would have liked:
Flashlight on gun or night vision - MOD already out for the flashlight
Pick up of items: You can kick them around, chairs, boxes and cans but you can't pick them up and use as a weapon.

You passed judgement on the entire game before you even finished the first level?

Most review sites are giving the game an 8 or 9 out of 10 (or equivalent, such as 4.5 out of 5 stars).

Played it on a friend's computer over the weekend and enjoyed it. Might buff up my system so I can play it as well. I enjoyed it, though nothing particularly revolutionary. Just good ole blast most everything in your path Doom. ;)

Yes. I'm not writing a review here I'm giving voice to my REACTIONS. My overwhelming initial reactions are annoyance, frustration, and disappointment and those set in HARD in a VERY short time. If the rest of the game blew chunks but I could at least SEE what are supposed to be cutting edge graphics I'd rate it higher.

Accordingly, it's now sat unplayed on my HD for a couple of days since first booting it up and I still feel like it will be a CHORE to try and plow far enough into it to see if it gets better.

Again as I said, I will TRY to play into it some ways to attempt to find out what others are seeing that could warrant such high ratings, but I'm not exactly looking forward to it.
