"Oh no! Something charging me from down the hallway. I better get my gun back out.. AH!" *something hits me from behind*

repeat 30 times

***

Later...

"Here comes another charging object from down a hall, hang on while I kill the enemy that spawned behind me in the area I already swept for enemies." *spins, fires blind, and kills the monster point blank with Ol' Bessie* "Now then..." *holds down the sprint button, puts the shotgun barrel squarely into the chest of the charging demon and injects one load of hot lead*

"Fool me 25 times... I learn."

Game is a little repetitive for my liking. And whats with the imps locking themselves in closets and wall panels that only open for them and only when it is most inopportune for you? But it's nice eye candy. And they did a good job at scaring me. If I considered being scared 300 times entertaining, I'd like this game a lot more.

Pardon me while I go download the duct tape mod.

Oh, god yes. I'm starting to hate this game because of all that stuff. Case in point is right now where I'm in alpha-lab-2 or thereabouts and I'm stuck in some pit where I carefully look for all the places stuff could come out and can't find more than one but suddenly, as soon as I press the button to raise the ladder (which moves WAY too slowly) fifteen gadjillion spider-things come out of nowhere and kill me. There's nowhere to hide where they can't get you. There is no cover. There's nowhere you can gain any kind of tactically advantagous position to defend yourself that I can tell. You are evidently expected to just madly blast away at them to try to survive for that agonizingly slow ladder to lift itself up enough to get out. Even then, they show up on top. I know the original Doom had a lot of stuff like that too and I didn't like it there either. It's just far more annoying because I can't see much of anything either. And because I would have thought they would have learned better after ten years.

In general, its only a mediocre FPS. For instance, I miss having lean controls, for one. They really needed to take a look at how Call of Duty does it. That's an FPS.

And the game doesn't do a very good job of scaring me, either. The sounds are fairly scary, but the rest of the game doesn't scare me. It startles me, but that's not really the same thing.

I gave it a 4 mostly because what little of the eye candy you can actually see is good and the sounds are very good. The gameplay leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion.

I think a big part of the problem might be the intended purpose of the game vs its audience. I was talking to a game store clerk who was raving about this game the other day and he told me that its not really intended to be a FPS as much as a "personal horror" game. All the stuff I was complaining about were supposed to be there to create atmosphere and frighten me. Well, I guess that's fine if that's what you're looking for, but I don't want a horror game and I don't expect that from a game called Doom 3. If I had known it was a "personal horror" game, I would have given it a pass just like I give horror movies a pass.

I have noticed this game is alot darker on my new card. I went from a 64 MB Ti4200 Gforce 4 to a ATI 128 MB 9600 XT. I'm not sure if its becuase I have a Direct X 9 card, or the issues that ATI cards have with the game.

I gave it a 9. I agree that the atmosphere is great. I really creates tension, and suspense during game play. The only reason I gave it a 9 is I thought they could have implemented an alt-fire. Even if it was to throw a grenade.

Too dark? Naw, it's supposed to look like that. The look of this game is great. That said, my PC won't run it and I have to play it at my neighbor's house. :( I'll probably be picking up the xbox version, but even at high def, it won't look nearly as good.

The story is pretty mediocre and cliched. I mean, really, do they have to recycle the same story they invented what, 15 years ago? One that's since been aped by Capcom in Resident Evil, and by others in games like Duke Nukkem and the like? Halo really spoiled me on story for a single player campaign FPS.
