I, too, found the single non-subtitled joke extremely funny...though it took me a moment :)

What was this joke? Was it
Why are you speaking English?

And yeah, Frank, I'm definitely a softie :).

Watched this last weekend. 8. Maybe I thought better of Shaolin Soccer, but by god, it's certainly a movie you can enjoy IF you like the combinations of Kill Bill with a few Hero aspects to it as well.

Maybe not the best movie ever, but certainly a great work in my view by Chow.

That was part of it- the part that I was referring to was the
"With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility" line that was spoken in English by the dying kung-fu master.
I was too busy reading the subtitles to notice the joke until afterwards. :(

A little late to this party, but just got back from seeing it.

A solid 8 from me. Great fun, and tons of little things all through it, but it started off pretty slow and stayed that way for the first half hour or so. Of course, when it picked up, the good got great. :)

On Stephen Chow:

God of Cookery: saw it with Japanese subtitles so missed very large amounts but lots of crazy fun.

Forbidden City Cop: Mostly incomprehensible to me but a couple of seriously hilarious moments. Mainly the Oscar speech and the alien autopsy.

From Beijing With Love: Not funny. Stopped watching half-way through. Didn't get it.

Shaolin Soccer: Funny, worth watching. Not always gut-busting but always chuckle-making. Again, a couple of brilliant bits.

I've seen Shaolin Soccer already (and I agree bang-on with your description/assessment), but the other three look a little obscure, even for me.

We saw Forbidden City Cop on a flight from Hong Kong to Tokyo. It was a little surreal as we were listening to an English dub that I think must have missed the entire point of the film. So we're surrounded by Chinese people who are killing themselves laughing while my wife and I are sitting there, thinking, "What the heck is going on?" Everyone listening on headphones so if you take them off, the plane is silent except for constant Chinese laughter.

Very strange experience.
