Reach Spell. +Two Spell Lvls??

Its funny how most are all awed by Harm and how a reach harm is so powerful.

I feel sorry for those that have a save on harm because at lvl 7 clerics get Destruction.

25'+5/2 lvls range

Fort save for partial

Die or save for 10d6 damage.

I you die only True res or wish and other spells can bring you back.

So Harm with a 30' for lvl 7 is SOOOOO differant. I mean it dosnt kill you. If you die from other damage you can be brought back by normal means.

Well, I have to agree that if used by an antagonist, perhaps Destruction is more frightening for the difficulty in bringing one PC back, but against high level big monsters who usually have so great a fortitude save that the chances of dying are almost nonexistent and with so many hit points that a mere 10d6 is a funny caress, be it a dragon or whatever past 200 or 300 hit points, then harm is a lot more useful, and harm with reach? It's simply the worst high-level DM nightmare, believe it or not.

I'm not trying to pick on anyone I just found this statement very funny. To think that we are at a point that any type of resurection can be termed normal. In our games, it's practically unheard of. It bugs me that there is so little consequances for dieing. When did this become like a video game where if you die, you punch in a few more quarters and all is well again?

Ummm since 1st edition AD&D?

Really Raise Dead and Resurrection have always been part of the D&D game. Heck 1st ed didn't even have a material component to Resurrection except a holy symbol and holy water. The penalties for being raised are more severe than they were before (System Shock roll not withstanding) - losing a level wasn't part of 1st ed.

This is not necessarily how you may run your games but it is how the rules were written.

I guess it's just that not only me, but pretty much everyone I've gamed with never used these rules. I've been playing for 19 years now, yet I've never had a character who needed to. I guess it's just playing styles. PCs rarely die, we like them too much and try not to have that happen. It just seems so common on these boards. It seems wrong or at least really odd.

Wow your lucky or your DM never throws anything tough at your party.

We are lvl 10-12 and have had 4 deaths two of which were me the Cleric.

At low-mid lvls its really easy to get killed from one Ogre or Troll.

We have had Enimies that have been Killed and Rased by there masters or followers. In a world were Rase Dead is around Death is not so permenent and to some scarry

We go against some tough things. We use tactics and a great amount of healing. We've had some close calls. Last week the Druid went down to -8 before I could heal him. I was 5. If I went down, then no one could do any healing and we'd be in trouble. Plus, we know when we're in over our head. If the encounter is to tough, we run. No shame in running to live to the next day.

So, in these games do people really try not to die? Or do they fight till their last breath knowing that the party will bring them back later?

Oh I defently try not to die. Droping a lvl is no fun. For RP reasons its because it herts and you may not get rased if everyone dies. Which you cant count on not happening.

My cleric just advanced to 6th level, so I had to select a feat. My top choices were Reach, Extra Turning, and Craft Magic Arms and Armor. I ended up going with Extra Turning, but Reach did seem to have a lot of unique applications that could really make a difference in a tight spot. I'll probably take it at 9th level, assuming I survive that long...we're going thru RTTToEE.

Melky....

I think part of the problem is that you are multi-classed. Meta-magic feats are never very effective for multi-classes characters because they have a lot less spell slots.

I think the feat is fine as is. And making it divine only or only +1 level for divine casters would only increase the power gap between wizards and clerics that is already there.

My two cents.

Well... 1e ressurection had what was in my opinion a much worse 'component' - it aged you 5 years when you cast it. Note that the note about that isn't in the 1e PH, you have to look in the DMG near the beginning where there are some additional rules about spellcasting, and some notes on specific spells. Just a historical note...
