Real Professions anyone? or What did you do when you grew up?

I just finished my PhD in Neuroscience (defended my dissertation in December 2003), and will formally graduate in May this year. Right now I'm just revising papers for publication (one to appear in Science!), and nailing down the job I want. I enjoy teaching more than research in an academic setting, although I might consider a job in industry (where you don't have to worry about funding) for a few years to do some really hardcore research. I was also offered a chance to train to be a pro wrestler about 5 years ago- does that count? :D

I'm a programmer/electrical engineer (multiclassed!). I work on air traffic control systems on aircraft carriers.

I'm an I.T. Manager for a company - I do the networking, the "dirty work", and plan the future expansions of networks and computing tech.

In a previuous life, I was a chemistry student who fell out of love with the field.

I daresay you'll likely have a LOT of Computer Programmers and IT pro's in this little survey - we are a geeky lot. :)

OH, and I moved us to off-topic.

I am an attorney, mainly handling workers' compensation claims.

Most of my clients are insurance companies and employers, but I have represented injured workers and still try to keep a few of those cases active so that I keep my mind fresh and able to see issues from both perspectives.

With my current firm just over 2 years, practicing for 9 years.

Right now I'm waiting...

on my test results for working at the local Target store. I'll be working as a truck unloader earning $8.00.

I'm also going back to college in the Summer to get prerequisites done for a BS in Medical Techology.

I'm a professional hobbiest. I have a lot of things that occupy me, but do it all for free :D I help a local paralyzed elderly man by cooking, cleaning, shopping, etc for him since he has no family. I do some online counseling (mainly with self-esteem issues) as a spiritual advisor. I am a homemaker. I am a ghosthunter/medium. And, of course, I roleplay :) I do everything I want to do, I just suffer without a whole lot of money :D Working on getting one of those "job" things, though :D

This could be a poll, but there are too many possible responses - I can't recall this being asked before, but I'll ask it anyway:

What is everyone's profession? I'm curious to see what cross-section of the population we have for gamers.

I was an economist: my specialty was transport economics, particularly the study of congestion in densely-reticulated road networks (ie. cities) by simulation programming.

But I retired at 37, and now I'm a gentleman of leisure.

Agback
